The movie 300 did a big disservice to the history of Thermopylae. While Leonidas may have "lost" the battle, his stalling action allowed Greece to evacuate her cities. This allowed the Greeks to crush the Persian empire mere years later.
It was the Spartan ideal to live on your feet rather than die on your knees that allowed them to crush their enemies in most situations. We could learn a lot from the Spartans.
