The "official" word is that it was 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate (AN) that was being stored in a warehouse, after having been seized some six years prior. It was a disaster just waiting for the right moron to come along.
For some perspective, the OKC bombing only involved 2 tons of AN.

I've seen speculation that it was an ICBM storage cook off. Hizbolla has weapons stored in every other house in Lebanon.
