B-24 Liberator shot down by Japanese anti aircraft artillery
I think if you have a look around Google you will realise that this particular Liberator was not hit by AA fire but sadly by bombs dropped by the Liberators above it. Had it been an AA round you would have seen more immediate blast and fragmentation damage; instead you simply see fuel vapor that is subsequently ignited by the radial engine exhausts.
The navigator survived, only to be executed by the Jap soldiers on the island; see friend Sippican Cottage blog a few weeks back. The wing was found in the shallows near the island, photos at Pacificwrecks.com, torn away by AA.
