American Rifleman tested the Burr duel pistols, that were owned and supplied by Hamilton. According to the article, it was unusual for one of the parties to a duel to supply the pistols; they were generally supplied by a neutral party or the seconds. NRA found that pushing the trigger forward would "set" it to a much lower pull ("hair trigger") than pulling the trigger normally would yield. It's possible that Hamilton set his trigger and, being a little nervous, accidentally fired.
