They're a kind of nearly microscopic open cell hard foam, so not only does the ball absorb oil off the lane, it's like it's covered with zillions of tiny suction cups. Now add in the trend towards palming the ball - really getting under it on the release so that the ball can be pitched with tremendous amounts of side rotation - and you have fundamentally changed the sport. Scores are much higher these days; what was a great score for a reasonably skilled bowler back in the 60s is pathetic by today's standards. And this, when the lanes have shifted from wood to the more challenging synthetic, and many times more oil is used than way back when. Bowling centers have become family centric, with all kinds of music, lighting, and entertainment screens. It's not the grubby nearly criminal world it was once upon a time.
