It’s over: Bill Nelson concedes to Rick Scott after Florida recount deadline passes

Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson conceded Florida’s race for U.S. Senate on Sunday, signaling the end of an 18-year run in Congress’ upper chamber and likely the close of a 46-year political career.

According to Gov. Rick Scott, who defeated Nelson in a race so close it required a manual recount, Nelson called to concede after the state posted official results in the race after 1 p.m. Nelson’s campaign says the outgoing senator will release a video statement at 3 p.m.

“I just spoke with Senator Bill Nelson, who graciously conceded, and I thanked him for his years of public service,” Scott said. in a statement sent by his campaign shortly after 2 p.m. “This victory would not be possible without the hard work of so many people. Now the campaign truly is behind us, and that’s where we need to leave it.”

Scott ultimately beat Nelson by 10,033 votes — or about 0.12 percent of the nearly 8.2 million votes cast in the race. The margin was so thin it triggered a mandatory machine recount on Nov. 10 and then an automatic manual recount Thursday.

Scott’s win gives Republicans a stronger majority in the U.S. Senate. The race was the most expensive senate contest in Florida history.

Nelson, 76, was first elected to office in a state House district in Melbourne, near Cape Canaveral, in 1972. He went to space as a congressman in 1986 and served several stints as Florida’s elected insurance commissioner. He won his U.S. Senate seat in 2000 and was....

"A Pure Genocide": Extremist Persecution of Christians, June 2018

A Catholic priest at the Milk Grotto in Bethlehem (pictured) suffered minor injuries on June 1, when a man struck him with what appeared to be a knife.
  • The majority of those 6,000 Christians massacred this year were "mostly children, women and the aged... What is happening in ... Nigeria is pure genocide and must be stopped immediately." — Christian Association of Nigeria.
  • "There is no doubt that the sole purpose of these attacks is aimed at ethnic cleansing, land grabbing and forceful ejection of the Christian natives from their ancestral land and heritage." — Christian Association of Nigeria.
  • "Realistically speaking, Christianity is on the brink of extinction in Nigeria. The ascendancy of Sharia ideology in Nigeria rings the death toll for the Nigerian Church." — Christian Association of Nigeria.
  • "Just one in 400 Syrian refugees given asylum in the UK last year were Christians despite them being subjected to 'horrendous persecution.'" — Express, UK.

The Jihad on Nigerian Christians

In what the Christian Association of Nigeria called a "pure genocide," 238 more Christians were killed and churches desecrated by Muslims throughout the month of June. This brings the death toll of Christians to more than 6,000 between January and June of 2018 alone. According to a joint statement by the Christian Association, an umbrella group of various Christian denominations, "There is no doubt that the sole purpose of these attacks is aimed at ethnic cleansing, land grabbing and forceful ejection of the Christian natives from their ancestral land and heritage." In one of the attacks, "over 200 persons were brutally killed and our churches destroyed without any intervention from security agencies in spite of several distress calls made to them."

The majority of those 6,000 Christians massacred this year were "mostly children, women and the aged... What is happening in ... Nigeria is pure genocide and must be stopped immediately." The details of the murder of these thousands, though seldom reported, are often grisly; many were either hacked to death or beheaded with machetes; others were burned alive (including inside locked churches or homes); and women are often sexually assaulted or raped before being slaughtered.

These nonstop Islamic attacks are causing the Christian population of the West African nation to plummet — to the point of extinction by 2043, warned Bosun Emmanuel, the secretary of National Christian Elders Forum. On June 23 he was reported as saying that the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria "is openly pursuing an anti-Christian agenda that has resulted in countless murders of Christians all over the nation and destruction of vulnerable Christian communities." Accordingly, "the Church has been weakened and unable to stand before its enemies. Realistically speaking, Christianity is on the brink of extinction in Nigeria. The ascendancy of Sharia ideology in Nigeria rings the death toll for the Nigerian Church."

Muslim Attacks on Christian Churches

Bosnia: Unknown persons set a Serbian Orthodox church on fire in the overwhelmingly Muslim majority town of Visoko. The arson attack occurred sometime in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 24. According to the report, "a majority of objects inside the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos — including icons and holy books — has been destroyed, along with a portion of the roof... [T]he main part of the altar has also been broken." That the church had only recently been "repaired over a period of two years" may be significant: According to the Conditions of Omar, which consists of discriminatory stipulations to which Christians must adhere in order to exist under Islamic rule, Christians are required "not to build a church in our city — nor a monastery, convent, or monk's cell in the surrounding areas — and not to repair those that fall in ruins or are in Muslim quarters."

Indonesia: Local Muslims forced the closure of another Christian church in Banjarmasin. "Muslims claimed that the approval given to the church by local authorities was not valid and should be cancelled," the report related. "As a result of the increased tension, the church has had to suspend services, leaving the 100-strong congregation without anywhere to meet." Indonesian law requires the signatures of at least 60 local, non-Christian — meaning Muslim — households before applications for Christian churches are accepted. Due to such requirements, another church that was established in 1995 in the same city has had to move its meeting location seven times. "Christians comprise at least 15% of the population of Indonesia and, until a generation ago, Christians and Muslims lived peaceably as equals," says the report. "However, Christians are now facing increasing discrimination and violence. There have been a number of attacks on churches, including the triple church suicide bombings carried out by members of the same family on Sunday 13 May 2018."

Pakistan: After months of local harassment — including being told "to remove every visible sign of Christianity from their church" — Christians were finally ordered to demolish their church because "Muslims are in the majority in...

Loggers support Trump's claim that wildfires caused by 'poor forest management'

A national logging organization is offering support to President Trump following catastrophic wildfires in California and a political debate over the causes of the destructive blazes.

“President Trump blamed poor forest management for wildfires in California and throughout the West, and there is truth to statements he has made,” said Daniel Dructor, executive vice president of the American Loggers Council, a coalition of state and regional associations that represents independent contract loggers.

“It’s time to rise above political posturing and recognize that active forest management — including logging, thinning, grazing and controlled burning — are tools that can and must be used to reduce fire risks and help mitigate the impacts to landscapes,” Mr. Dructor said in a statement.

According to the council, some 60 million to 80 million acres of national forest are at “high, to very high, risk of catastrophic wildfire.”

Citing research from the U.S. Forest Service, the council backs such methods as thinning stressed trees and...

Washington DC Carry Permits Skyrocket After Dismissal of ‘Good Cause’ Regulation

Washington, DC, concealed carry permits are skyrocketing following the dismissal of the District’s “good cause” restriction for permit issuance.

On July 25, 2017, Breitbart News reported that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that D.C.’s “good reason” requirement for concealed carry permit issuance is unconstitutional. The ruling was handed down in Wrenn v. District of Columbia.

According to the Daily Caller, the District’s “Metropolitan Police Department confirmed … Tuesday that 1,896 concealed carry permits were issued by MPD for the calendar year to date 2018.” That represents a “1,440 percent” jump in the number of permits which were issued while the “good cause” restriction was in place.

New Jersey continues to artificially limit the concealed carry permit issuance by requiring applicants to show a justifiable need for carrying a handgun. And California continues to...

Tijuana mayor on arriving migrant caravan: ‘It’s a tsunami’

About 2,000 members of the migrant caravan have now reached their destination in Tijuana, Mexico, just a few miles south of San Diego. But the town’s mayor and many residents have not been thrilled by their arrival. Friday, Mayor Juan Manuel Gastélum called the influx a “tsunami” and referred to some of the migrants as “bums.” From the San Diego Tribune:

“It’s a tsunami,” he said during a news conference at City Hall. “This situation is purposely orchestrated, with the intention of harming Tijuana,” he added, without specifying who might be behind the group.

By Friday, Tijuana police had detained seven caravan members — six Hondurans and a Guatemalan — according to Marco Antonio Sotomayor, Tijuana’s public safety secretary, who said they will be turned over to Mexican immigration authorities for deportation.

Two were inebriated and fighting each other in Playas de Tijuana; three were arrested at the city’s newly opened shelter in the Zona Norte for smoking marijuana, and two were arrested for consuming illegal drugs across town in Camino Verde, one of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods.

The mayor is calling for a referendum, one that would allow city residents to express their concerns about the large number of caravan members ending up in the city. He has also suggested checkpoints at the city’s entrance, but on Friday called them “an extreme” measure suggesting that he was not yet prepared to take such a step.
But Gastelum himself has come under much criticism from migrant advocates for his comments made in an interview Thursday on Milenio TV, a Mexican national television network, where he complained about the arrival of the caravan members: “Some of them are a bunch of bums, smoking marijuana in the street, and attacking our families in Playas de Tijuana,” the mayor said. “Who is leading them?”…USA Today reports Mayor Gastélum also said, “No city in the world is prepared to receive this … avalanche.” But it’s not just the mayor who is upset. Some local residents unhappy that the migrants are showing up and demanding services and turning parts of the town into ...

10 People Who Died From Taking Selfies In Recent Times

Selfies, defined as a self-portrait photograph typically taken with a smartphone in one’s hand or with the help of a selfie stick, are one of the most popular trends to make an appearance on social media in recent years. These kind of pictures are usually taken to boast about an event or an achievement or as a gesture of self-love. Buzz Aldrin even took a selfie in space back in 1966.

Since selfies are such a popular trend, and people feel a tremendous sense of validation from others because of these kinds of pictures, it’s perhaps not surprising to see how far some will go for the perfect shot. Selfie-related deaths are a shocking statistic making an appearance around the world, with a study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care stating that about 259 people have died from attempting to photograph themselves between October 2011 and November 2017.[1]

Here are ten of the more unique ways people have died by taking selfies in recent times:

10 Fell Off A Cliff

In November 2018, a 35-year-old German tourist was visiting a 1,200-meter-high (4,000 ft) cliff called World’s End in Sri Lanka. Thinking that the breathtaking sight would make the perfect photo, she took out her phone to take a snap of herself and her friend. Unfortunately, she stumbled and fell off the sheer cliff, much to the horror of everyone else present. The Sri Lankan army and volunteers spent six hours in search of the woman’s body, an effort which involved air support and a fair bit of climbing.

World’s End is a popular location situated in Horton Plains National Park, and it’s considered to be one of the biggest tourist attractions on the entire island. Even though this woman tragically lost her life, this isn’t the first time someone fell off the cliff trying to take a selfie. In 2015, a Dutch man on honeymoon with his wife attempted to take a selfie when he plummeted off the precipice. Miraculously, he survived the ordeal because a tree broke his fall about 15 meters (50 ft) down the cliff.[2]

9 Fell 27 Stories

In yet another case of falling to one’s death, a woman slipped off her balcony while trying to take a selfie in October 2018. She was Sandra Manuela Da Costa Macedo, a 44-year-year old mother of two children. She was a teacher from Portugal who had recently moved to Panama City. The incident took place at her apartment in the Luxor Tower. Nearby construction workers were able to film her as they tried to warn her of the potential danger she was putting herself in. Then, tragedy struck. According to witnesses, she was still holding onto the selfie stick as she fell 27 stories to her death.

A witness who also lives in the Luxor Tower also saw the incident unfold and recounted that Macedo decided to sit on the railing for her last selfie when she she went over the edge. The video that was recorded by the construction workers made the rounds on social media, with users commenting on how sorry they were for her passing as well as how this incident was one of the stupidest ways to die.[3]

8 Drowned In A Lake

In October 2018 in India, three students climbed onto a moss-covered rock at the edge of a lake to take a selfie together, and one of them slipped off. The other two jumped in to rescue their friend, but all of them got stuck in silt and drowned. This incident took place when the three boys were on a school trip along with 51 other students and seven teachers. They were part of the National Service Scheme team visiting the area. The victims were identified as Poornachandra (18), Mohammed Murtuza (17) and Shashank (17), all of whom were PUC students at the Siddaganga Boys PU College in Tumakuru.

The three boys went to the other side of the lake to take the selfie when the incident took place. Even though another student jumped in to save them, they had already drowned by the time they could be reached. The locals alerted the police and the fire and rescue services, after which the boys’ bodies could only be fished out of the lake and sent off to the Nelmangala Government Hospital for postmortem examinations.[4]

7 Killed By A Plane

Also in October 2018, in Chinapas, Mexico, two teenage girls were killed while trying to take selfies on a runway when a plane was in the process of landing. The girls were 17 and 18 years old and had arrived earlier to attend the races that took place near the airport. The two were standing on the tarmac when they didn’t notice an oncoming plane attempting to land. The plane’s wing struck both of the girls’ heads, killing them instantly.

The pilot of the plane in question noticed the girls standing on the tarmac, but before he could do anything to prevent the tragedy, it was already too late. The authorities launched an investigation into the incident.[5]

6 Fell Off The Roof Of A Mall

In September 2018, a teenager in Italy climbed onto the roof of a mall to take a selfie when he tragically fell to his death. His name was Andrea Barone, and the incident took place on a Saturday night at the Sarca shopping center in Milan when he crashed into an air duct and fell from the third floor. According to the local newspaper, the Corriere Della Sera, the 15-year-old and a group of his friends secretly ascended the building by climbing over gates and fences to get to the top. After taking the life-threatening selfie, the boy tried to descend back down the building when he fell into the ventilation duct.

Emergency services desperately tried to save the boy’s life but were unable to do so due to his severe injuries. Barone was a student at the Eugenio Montale technical institute and captain of the football team. He was known for his dangerous selfies, which he posted on Instagram, a number of which were taken on the roofs of buildings. Ironically, one of the slogans that he posted on the social media platform was: “Death does not scare us, we look at it in the face.”

Barone’s family questioned why there wasn’t adequate security on-site to prevent the accident from taking place. The mayor of Cusano Milanino, Lorenzo Gaiani, extended his sincerest condolences to Barone’s family and said that his administration as well as the whole community was shocked at the absurdity of this death.[6]
