Nah, you can be shot and not even know it until halfway through a, urhm, hike back out. Sometimes you won't even go through shock until your blood gauge starts hitting low. For many, it isn't the bullet... the wound... that kills... it's the fear, shock. Depends a bit on your pain threshold and experience with pain. Though it does hurt when that finally catches up to you. Enough to take your breath away for a 'second'. Looks like the right formula, only some of which you can do yourself, however.
