Trump is giving the British an incentive to do a hard Brexit under new Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
President Donald Trump met with new United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson this weekend, and hinted that a “very big trade deal” would be in the works following the Brexit.
Trump made the remarks during the G7 summitin Biarritz, France where he issued a ringing endorsement for Johnson, who recently supplanted the disgraced Theresa May vowing that Britain will finally leave the European Union (EU) by October.
“He needs no advice, he’s the right man for the job,” Trump said after he was asked to give pointers on how Johnson could achieve a Brexit.
“This is a different person and this is a person that is going to be a great prime minister in my opinion,” he added.
While there is still great political opposition from the elites to reverse the will of the voters and keep Britain in the EU, Trump is offering a counter-balance to their influence and promising a great trade deal after Johnson pulls off the Brexit.
“We’re are having very good trade talks between the U.K. and ourselves. We’re going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than we’ve ever had with the UK,” Trump said.
“At some point, they won’t have the obstacle of, they won’t have the anchor around their ankle, because that’s what they had. So, we’re going to have some very good trade talks and big numbers,” he added.
Johnson is excited about the possibilities after Britain finally leaves the EU, and his nation regains its sovereignty and is able to pursue the best possible trade deal with the U.S. without having to worry about international bureaucrats getting in the way.
