Three women hurl objects, attack Spirit Airline employees after flight delay, land in cuffs

Three Philadelphia women had what might be described as a spirited response to a flight delay at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Airport on Tuesday night.

They “landed” in jail as a result, and their departure was postponed until the next day.

After getting through long TSA screening queues and whatnot, not-on-time departures are understandably frustrating for travelers, but this incident takes it to a whole other level.

Apparently upset over the delay to their return flight, they allegedly threw items such as shoes, water bottles, metal signs, and fast food at Spirit Airlines employees at the gate.

“[E]mployees were punched and kicked repeatedly,” after they allegedly charged Spirit workers behind the counter, the Philadelphia Inquirer claimed.

Spirit employees managed to calm things down after about a minute.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the encounter.

A cell phone video of the encounter in Terminal 4 went viral on social media. See the footage embedded below.

Broward County Sheriff’s deputies arrested all three on battery charges. One of the travelers was booked on an additional charge of petit theft for allegedly swiping a Spirit worker’s cell phone. The trio bonded out the following morning.

In a statement, the airline explained that “Three guests became combative following a delayed flight, and they were arrested for physically assaulting our Team Members. Three of our Team Members sustained minor injuries.

“We thank our team members for their professionalism and quick actions, and we also thank the Broward Sheriff’s Office for their assistance …This violent behavior is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in airports or any other place of business. We will not tolerate abusive behavior of any kind. Further questions about this incident should be referred to law enforcement.”

The brawl prompted a big reaction on Twitter. Here is sample:

  1. I hope the airline had enough sense to CANCEL their ticket to fly to Philly and to ban them from future flights!

  2. Those aren't people, they're animals.
Human beings are able to regulate their emotions, even when stressed, kind of a hallmark of advanced intellect...
I saw the same thing at the zoo one time, in the monkey house. One monkey got pissed when another one stole his banana, and the whole cage started going nuts, throwing their toys and food at each other.

  4. The airline, as well as all other businesses, should train their employees in defensive force techniques so as to be able to protect themselves and neutralize the threat.

  6. You had to expect this. The media has been calling rioters "heroes" for the past few months because they agree with the agenda. It's only logical that some people will start to think that using violence for ANYTHING that irritates them is now an acceptable response.

This is what we reap from the stupidity we have sown for the past few months.

  7. I flew freight for 30 years before working at Spirit until retirement. Spirit was a great company but it seemed very other flight was a sh*tshow. The stories I could tell. I mean, who does sh*t like this?
