I Did Everything They Told Me To Do, How Did My Child Get Myocarditis?

  1. This guy is correct. Myocarditis isn't something that you fully recover from. I've even seen patients that had such a mild case from a viral infection that it wasn't even diagnosed at the time. It was only months later when the patient died from a sudden arrhythmia and the autopsy showed old cardiac scars that likely led to a re-entry arrhythmia that the myocarditis was suspected.

You can appear to recover, but any lost myocardial function is gone forever. Heart cells do not replicate and cannot replace themselves. That means that any physical limitations will not improve. These dead cells can also lead to a possibility of electrical activity arriving at just the wrong time leading to fatal heart rhythms. That is why there is an approximately 60% 5 year mortality, and no one knows the longer term because it's too difficult to weed out who died from that or another arrhythmia.

Even with known risks like Wolff-Parkinson-White, the potential arrhythmogenic pathway exists at birth, but the death from arrhythmia can occur decades later. This is likely the case with myocarditis damage as well. It may well be a land mine patiently waiting to go off years or decades later.
