I've taken dozens, if not hundreds of cuterebra larvae out of cats and (especially) rabbits over the years. The fly injects an egg under the skin and the larva lives off the body secretions. It chews a tiny (2-5 mm) hole and sticks its spiracles out of it to breathe. They can get rather large, as you saw in the video. When they're ready to pupate they chew a hole big enough to wiggle out of then bury themselves, turn into a pupa and then emerge as a big, ugly fly.
What the heck was in that kitten's ear??!!!?
ReplyDeleteBot fly larva! Several other similar videos online. All just as gross. I wonder if this one will now be deaf in that ear?
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't in the ear. botfly larva just burrow into the skin of mammals once the eggs hatch.
