Walz was on a controlled promotion to E-9. He bailed when he learned his unit was going to be deployed to Iraq leaving his unit without a Command Sargent Major.
But he refers to himself as a "retired command sergeant major", when it would be more accurate to state "served as command sergeant major, and am a retired national guardsman" I saw the ribbon rip on Wikipedia, and it shows no overseas service, or campaign ribbons. I have 2 ARCOM's awarded in my 201 file, and I left the Army as an E-5. Looking at the record that is available I am not personally impressed with the overall career arc of MSG Walz, but I am also aware of the shenanigans during the "Summer of Love" between standing down the police response, and working with Harris to help keep the rotating door open for "protestors"
