According to Matthew 2, he became alarmed when the Magi arrived in Jerusalem asking about a newborn “King of the Jews.” Herod saw the child not as the promised Savior but as a possible rival. His fear of losing power led to deception, the killing of young boys in Bethlehem, and the Holy Family’s flight to Egypt.
