My city (Wellington New Zealand) was subject to a substantial earthquake some years ago in the middle of the night. It went on for quite a while and I had time to get out of bed and walk to the bedroom ranchslider for a look outside. There were flashing lights in the sky in the direction of the epicenter and I can now say I've seen earthquake lights. They were thought to be a myth until recently but no more I gather. All quite exciting.
