Even after changing to dial, there was still the party line. Every phone on the network exchange could receive your conversation. You could tell people to get off the line (by hanging up). Most would, someone wouldn't. You generally knew who they were because they would blabber the 'news'.
Most aggravating was if you mis-dialed, you'd hang up to break the connection, pick up the handset again, listen for dial tone, then redial. You could still mess up.
