shadow length depends partly on the direction of travel, particularly when walking toward or away from a light source (like the sun or a streetlamp).
The length of a shadow is determined by the angle of the light source relative to the object. Walking direction changes that angle, which in turn alters the length of the shadow
There’s an assumption here that in both photos the individual is walking in precisely the same direction.
