Why are there pedestrian gates in the first place? Notice the gates are too narrow for vehicles.

Anonymous, I can offer an answer to your question. Is it truth? Maybe.

The gates were supposedly built to provide a way to clear debris that accumulates during monsoonal rain runoff. The debris can build up against the wall which leads to erosion of the underlying structure.

Having spent time in the desert, having seen the rivers of runoff that can occur, this is a plausible explanation. Is it truth? Not for me to say.
