The September 11 attacks were a coordinated series of four suicide terrorist attacks carried out by the militant group al-Qaeda against the United States on September 11, 2001. [1]

- The Hijackers: 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes on domestic flights in the U.S.
- The Death Toll: A total of 2,977 victims died in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. [1, 2]
- World Trade Center (New York City): Flight 11 hit the North Tower and Flight 175 hit the South Tower. Both iconic Twin Towers eventually collapsed. [1, 2]
- The Pentagon (Arlington County, Virginia): Flight 77 was flown into the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense. [1]
- Shanksville (Pennsylvania): Flight 93 crashed into an open field after passengers and crew fought the hijackers, preventing the plane from hitting its intended target in Washington, D.C. (believed to be the U.S. Capitol or the White House). [1, 2]
