April 30, 1803: The Louisiana Purchase Is Completed

The Louisiana Purchase Treaty is signed between the United States and France. Robert Livingston and James Monroe agreed to pay France $15 million (more than $300 million today) for 828,000 square miles of land that lay west of the Mississippi River. The area was greater than Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal combined, and greatly expanded the United States' territory.

The Louisiana Purchase  doubled the size of the United States,  which included land from fifteen present-day states. This acquisition not only expanded U.S. territory but also secured control over the crucial Mississippi River and facilitated westward expansion, shaping the nation's future growth.
