Bird and snake caused 40-acre fire near Great Falls, Montana

GREAT FALLS - A wildland fire that burned an estimated 40 acres near Great Falls on Wednesday morning was caused by a hawk and a snake.

The fire was reported at about 10:20 a.m. near 3500 Rainbow Dam Road.

The area is north of the Missouri River and east of Black Eagle, near the dirt-track racing facility.

There were no injuries.

No buildings were burned, but several utility poles were damaged.

The Black Eagle Volunteer Fire Department says that their investigation determined that a bird - likely a hawk - swooped down to grab a snake.

As the snake struggled to break free, it smacked into a nearby powerline, which then sparked, sending a current through the snake and the hawk, killing them both.

Sparks then flew to the bone-dry ground, which triggered the fire.

Fire crews from Ulm, Sand Coulee, Vaughn, MT Air National Guard, Malmstrom AFB and Great Falls provided mutual aid in fighting the fire.

NorthWestern Energy and the Cascade County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.

MIT study puts end to lowball estimate of illegal immigrants frequently thrown around. Double it!

The true number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. — long a subject of intense debate — could be twice as high as commonly accepted figures, according to a study by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher.

The study published Friday by Mohammad Fazel-Zarandi, a senior lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, estimates there are about 22.1 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. today. Most frequently cited estimates put the number between 11 and 12 million.

Even the lower bound of the MIT study’s range, 16.7 million, is nearly 50 percent higher than the 11.3 million estimated by the Pew Research Center for 2016.

Such a wide discrepancy is explained by deficiencies in the methods researchers have used to arrive at previous estimates, according to Fazel-Zarandi and his co-authors, Edward Kaplan and Jonathan Feinstein of Yale University. In the past, researchers typically extrapolated the total number of illegal immigrants from population surveys and legal immigration records.

Fazel-Zarandi and his colleagues used mathematical modeling based on “operational data” — border apprehensions, deportations, visa overstays and demographic data — to arrive at their estimate. The approach eliminated the uncertainty found in methods that rely on surveys, which are a less reliable gauge of the illegal immigrant population, according to the researchers.

“It’s very likely that undocumented immigrants are more difficult to locate and survey than other foreign-born residents, and if contacted, they might be inclined to misreport their country of origin, citizenship, and number of household residents fearing the legal consequences of revealing their status,” Fazel-Zarandi in a news release. “Any of these circumstances would lead to underestimating the true number of unauthorized immigrants.”

The MIT study, which spans 1990 to 2016, also used newly available arrest data to estimate the number of illegal border crossings during that time period. It found the number of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. rose steadily throughout the 1990s, peaked around 2008, and has leveled off and stabilized since then.

If corroborated, the numbers reported in the MIT study could have major implications for immigration policy under the Trump administration, which has made a crackdown on illegal immigration a centerpiece of its agenda. President Donald Trump has repeatedly painted illegal immigration as threat to public safety and the economic well-being of American workers, while administration critics contend he is exaggerating the scope of the problem.

“Debates about the amount of resources to devote to this population and the relative benefits and disadvantages of alternative policies — including deportation, amnesty, and border control — depend greatly on...

Rosenstein Prepped to Secretly Wear Wire to Record Trump, Plotted His Removal from White House

The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, suggested last year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit.

Mr. Rosenstein made these suggestions in the spring of 2017 when Mr. Trump’s firing of James B. Comey as F.B.I. director plunged the White House into turmoil. Over the ensuing days, the president divulged classified intelligence to Russians in the Oval Office, and revelations emerged that Mr. Trump had asked Mr. Comey to pledge loyalty and end an investigation into a senior aide.

Mr. Rosenstein was just two weeks into his job. He had begun overseeing the Russia investigation and played a key role in the president’s dismissal of Mr. Comey by writing a memo critical of his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. But Mr. Rosenstein was caught off guard when Mr. Trump cited the memo in the firing, and he began telling people that he feared he had been used.

Mr. Rosenstein made the remarks about secretly recording Mr. Trump and about the 25th Amendment in meetings and conversations with other Justice Department and F.B.I. officials. Several people described the episodes, insisting on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The people were briefed either on the events themselves or on memos written by F.B.I. officials, including Andrew G. McCabe, then the acting bureau director, that documented Mr. Rosenstein’s actions and comments.

None of Mr. Rosenstein’s proposals apparently came to fruition. It is not clear how determined he was about seeing them through, though he did tell Mr. McCabe that he might be able to persuade Attorney General Jeff Sessions and John F. Kelly, then the secretary of homeland security and now the White House chief of staff, to mount an effort to invoke the...

Donald Trump on Brett Kavanaugh Vote: ‘I Don’t Think You Can Delay it Any Longer’

President Donald Trump signaled Friday that he was growing impatient with the delays over the vote to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee.

“I don’t think you can delay it any longer,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. “They’ve delayed it a week already.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee delayed the vote after Christine Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault over 30 years ago when they were both in high school.

Trump said he was willing to hear testimony from Ford, despite her reluctance to appear in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.

“Let her have her say, and let’s see how it all works out,” he said.

Trump questioned why the allegations were not made public sooner and said that it was a “sad situation” for Kavanaugh, who is a great man.

The president mentioned the Kavanaugh situation during his rally in Las Vegas on Thursday night.

“Oh look at our judges, what is going on?” he exclaimed, prompting an angry roar from the energetic crowd as they shouted “Kavanaugh!”

Trump supporters in Las Vegas chant "Kavanaugh!" after the president asks, "Look at our judges! What's going on?"
Trump did not attack the accuser, focusing instead on the integrity of Kavanaugh.

“I am not saying anything about anyone else, but I want to tell you that Brett Kavanaugh is one of the finest human beings you will ever...

KAVANAUGH, DESANTIS AND THE HUMAN COST OF FAKE NEWS

Politico, the media outlet of choice for flacks and hacks, has declared that Ron DeSantis, the conservative Republican running for Governor of Florida, against the media’s favorite new socialist, suffered his “fifth race-related” controversy.

That fifth “controversy” is about something that somebody who isn’t DeSantis tweeted. The fourth controversy also involved a DeSantis donor. The third controversy falsely smeared the David Horowitz Freedom Center’s Restoration Weekend attended by DeSantis (and Medal of Honor winner Clinton Romesha). The second involved a GOP official who also isn’t DeSantis. And the first was that DeSantis had been added without his knowledge to a Facebook group where other people said racist things.

And the media actually dares to get offended when people call it, ‘Fake News’.

What the five “race-related” scandals have in common is that none of them involve DeSantis. They’re all guilt by association. Even by the loosest possible association, a donor, a GOP official, someone on the same Facebook page or someone in Florida.

These fake news scandals aren’t being generated because there’s any basis to the racism smear. It’s a strategic campaign decision made because DeSantis’ opponent, Andrew Gillum, is African-American. Since Gillum is black, the Democrats decided to accuse DeSantis of racism. (If DeSantis were running against a woman, he would be accused of sexism.) And the media decided to advance the smear by inventing “race-related” scandals based on the flimsiest of premises to help the Democrats win.

The fake news template is to find somebody in Florida who said something controversial, then to demand that the DeSantis campaign disavow it. And presto, there’s another “race-related” controversy.

But the DeSantis fake news blizzard is mild compared to the campaign against Brett Kavanaugh.

Like DeSantis, the Kavanaugh smear was a purely tactical decision. Once the Democrats had decided to narrow the focus of their campaign to....
