September 6, 1522: Ferdinand Magellan Becomes The First To Circumnavigates The Globe

 The Victoria arrives at Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain, becoming the first vessel to circumnavigate the globe. Three years earlier, Ferdinand Magellan had set out from Spain with the Victoria and four other ships in hopes of finding a western route to Indonesia. But though the Victoria made it back to Spain, Magellan didn’t — he was killed in battle in the Philippines in April 1521.

Ferdinand Magellan is significant because he organized and led the historic Ferdinand Magellan expedition (1519–1522), which achieved the first recorded circumnavigation of Earth. [1]

• First Circumnavigation: Proved that the globe could be completely sailed around, even though Magellan died in the Philippines in 1521 and surviving crew members finished the journey under Juan Sebastián Elcano. [1]
