Evidence found on Oak Island, Nova Scotia seems to point to the presence of Vikings, Templars, and possibly others as early as the 1100s. If in fact they were burying treasure on the island, they obviously would not want to announce their travels to the world.
Why search for a new trade route to Asia? Because the Muslims had shut down the Marco Polo trade routes.
