America is about so much more than 1619

The speech of the year in 1984 was an address to Republican Convention. Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jeane J. Kirkpatrick brought the crowd to its feet many times over with her repeated litany that when anything went wrong anywhere in the world or the country, the instinctive response of the American Left, and indeed the Left anywhere, was to "blame America first."

Their aim was not to acknowledge the nation's flaws, but to hold up those flaws as the whole of the matter, as if the flaws had been all that there ever was. Because it was lost, Vietnam was the one war that mattered. Because they were wrong, segregation and slavery were the two things that defined the whole country, and still define it now that they’re gone.

Having failed to prove that the country was sick because the president had sold out to Russia, the New York Times has gone back to that oldest of wells to say that the country is still doomed by segregation and slavery. Neither the Civil War nor the civil rights movement had any effect. America is really all about slavery, and its real founding was not 1787, when delegates signed the Constitution, but 1619, when the first slave ship arrived on the coast of Virginia.

Of course, in 1619, as "the country" consisted of two tiny outposts on the coast. But out of that seed grew the malevolent plant, which would soon threaten everything — the contradiction between Thomas Jefferson’s words that "all men are created equal" and "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights," and the harsh fact that he, in his long life, literally owned hundreds of people with no rights at all.

This conflict between Jefferson’s life and his own aspirations would force his country to re-found itself many times over. This included the 1860’s, when it ended slavery, and one hundred years later, when segregation was ended. Each alteration brought the United States closer to his aspirations.

The Times acts as if the ill-fated landing in 1619 was an event that froze everything. In fact, it was only a series of many ongoing adjustments, which may not yet have run out their course.

None of founders who left Philadelphia in 1787, when the Constitutional Convention had ended, had any illusions that their problems were settled. The Times doesn't say that abolitionist movements existed almost as long as did slavery; that Washington said that if the Union broke up over slavery he would leave Virginia and side with the North; that Jefferson called slavery "a fire-bell in the...

Eight Things to Know About the Biden Family’s Culture of Corruption

The shabby depravity of CNN, NBC, MSNBC, the NYT, et al.

Everyone paying attention to current events and the political wars that bedevil us all knows that CNN, NBC, and MSNBC are not honest brokers in any sense of the word. For the eight years of the Bush administration, they verbally assaulted the president all day, every day. George W. ignored their dishonest, calculated attacks in an effort to remain above the fray. Bush gave these alleged news outlets a pass by refusing to take them on. This was a mistake that Donald Trump learned not to repeat. He has fought back from moment one, with a quick retort or tweet. The same media and their mouthpieces slavishly idealized Barack Obama and overlooked and or covered up his many crimes and egregious errors in judgment. For the left media crowd, Obama could have ordered a genocide, and they still would have idolized him. Obama effectively did sanction the slaughter of Christians throughout the Middle East during his administration; he welcomed many thousands of Muslim refugees and refused refugee status to displaced Christians who were targeted by ISIS. Christians have been effectively erased from the entire region.

The same media employed all the same tactics to candidate Trump even before he became the candidate. They mocked him; late-night comics devoted their programs to deriding the man. Once he became the candidate, they all doubled down and became downright vicious. When it comes to venomous cruelty, no one tops the Left, in the media and in the entertainment sector. When focused on a perceived enemy of their regressive progressiveness, they toss aside any sense of decency and go for the jugular. They become everything we teach our children and grandchildren never to become: contemptible, intolerant snobs. That is exactly who these persons with a media platform have become: malignant reprobates. Nothing proves this more than their campaign to...

They’ve Lost Their Minds in San Francisco

San Francisco, a city described in song for its natural beauty, is descending into an abyss of homelessness, the use of sidewalks as toilets, and a place you might not want to visit, much less live.

The latest, but surely not the last demonstration of insanity, is San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors’ adoption of new “person first” language guidelines meant to “change the public’s perception of criminals.”

The words “convicted felon,” “offender,” “convict,” “addict,” and “juvenile delinquent” are now out. These individuals will henceforth be referred to as a “justice-involved person.” Someone previously called a “criminal” will now be referred to as “a returning resident,” or “a formerly incarcerated person.”

Supervisor Matt Haney told the San Francisco Chronicle the intent is to keep people from being “forever labeled for the worst things that they have done. We want them, ultimately, to become contributing citizens, and referring to them as felons is like a scarlet letter that they can never get away from.”

A noble objective, to be sure, but language has—or used to have—a purpose beyond interpersonal communication. Like so much else today, language has now been appropriated to advance political agendas.

The encroachment of euphemisms on common sense is everywhere. Illegal immigrants have become “undocumented workers.” Babies in the womb lose their humanity when they are labeled “fetuses.”

Euphemisms are most used to hide a more accurate description of behavior or status in order to avoid conflict, or not injure someone who might be offended or hurt. It fails to communicate anything meaningful, while claiming to do so. George Orwell called it “Newspeak,” or “doublespeak.”

Too often, euphemisms are used to make bad behavior appear good, or at least tolerable, and to allow one to avoid responsibility and accountability. They are interpreted according to one’s personal wishes. As Humpty Dumpty told Alice in the Lewis Carroll classic: “When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”

The English language once conveyed meaning. Properly written and spoken, it suggested one was educated and capable of conversing in polite company. Today, it is often used to cover up true intentions. Consider how often...

Liz Warren Vows to Tax Gun Owners Back to the Stone Age with Radical Anti-Second Amendment Agenda

The power to tax is the power to destroy."

-John Marshall, 4th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court

U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential contender Liz Warren wants to tax us gun owners back to the Stone Age, as a part of her radical gun control agenda, revealed this weekend.

If elected, Warren promises to raise taxes on firearms and ammo purchases by 30% and 50%, respectively. That's on top of her plan for federal licensing for gun ownership -- presumably with a federal database of who owns what -- expanded background checks, and a renewed ban on "assault-style" weapons.

Warren revealed her plans at the Gun Safety Forum in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, an event organized by Michael Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun Safety. She also posted on Medium:
"The next President has a moral obligation to use whatever executive authority she has to address the gun crisis, but it is obvious that executive action is not enough. Durable reform requires legislation — but right now legislation is impossible. Why? A virulent mix of corruption and abuse of power."

What's she saying here? That she intends to go after the NRA and other lobby groups' "stranglehold on Congress" with new anti-corruption legislation. "Anti-corruption" in this case means "using the law to silence dissent." Because you can't gut the Second Amendment without gutting the First -- and vice-versa. Imagine the howls, under the first Republican president following a Liz administration, when progressive groups learn that Warren has neutered their First Amendment rights, too.

Payback's a... you know.

ASIDE: How about some legislation preventing presidential longshots from attempting to corrupt the Bill of Rights? Maybe a 50% tax on proposals to subvert Constitutional protections? Hey, I'm just trying to save lives here.

Never mind that illegal gun transitions won't be subject to Warren's punitive taxes, or that millions of us spent the Obama years stockpiling ammo. And, oh, by the way, all my firearms and ammo were lost in a tragic fishing accident, and I was too drunk at the time to remember which lake.

Warren's gun control push is the center of her plan to reduce gun deaths by 80%, down from around 40,000 annually. According to the most recent figures I could find, nearly two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides. So it might seem that if your...
