The appalling vanity of Western feminists who think Margaret Atwood writes about them

Imagine a country where women have no jobs, no rights and are valued only for reproductive success. Imagine a country where girls aren’t taught to read in case they get ideas. Imagine those women and those girls having to cover themselves head to toe in restrictive red dresses and white bonnets in case men get ideas. Imagine public stonings and hangings of deviants to terrorise the populace into a state of paranoid purity. Welcome to the Republic of Gilead.

It is almost 35 years since Margaret Atwood wrote The Handmaid’s Tale. The book envisaged the United States becoming a theocratic dictatorship, its byzantine cruelties leavened by folksy Puritan homilies: ‘Praise be!’ With fertility in decline, elite couples in the regime had fertile females assigned to them as ‘handmaids’. The wretched brood mares took the name of their Commanders. Atwood’s heroine was called Offred — literally ‘of Fred’.

This week a sequel, The Testaments, was published. It was hardly your average book launch. Atwood held court at the National Theatre as the actress Lily James read aloud and the event was broadcast live to cinemas around the world. With all due respect to the author’s brilliance on the page, interest in The Testaments was largely driven by the Emmy award-winning TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale (now in its third series). Proof that it had become a bona fide cultural phenomenon came when make-up mogul Kylie Jenner held a Handmaid’s Tale-themed birthday party. Guests were ‘gifted’ an ‘iconic’ red cloak, women had ‘Of’ put in front of their names and everyone got tanked up on ‘Praise Be Vodka’ and ‘Under His Eye Tequila’. The 22-year-old billionairess attracted criticism for being ‘tone deaf’ about all that rape and torture stuff. But, c’mon, guys, lighten up: Gilead was trending!

Best of all, Atwood has been hailed for prophesying the terrifying totalitarian age of Trump. Actress Elisabeth Moss, who plays Offred, said that she couldn’t help but recognise the similarities between Trump’s America and the brutal regime in the story. Wait, has Donald really frozen women’s bank accounts and enacted laws so they could be compulsorily raped and forced to give up their babies to the ruling class? Well, maybe not exactly, but, you know, ‘chilling parallels’, ‘frighteningly relevant’, blah blah. With no greater self-awareness than Kylie Jenner, feminists in the US co-opted the handmaid’s penitential costume of scarlet robe and white head-dress as a symbol of the #MeToo movement and of protest against the threat to reproductive rights. ‘I wish Handmaid’s Tale was insane Game of Thrones shit and pure fantasy,’ lamented Moss. ‘I wish that were true. But it’s not.’

She’s right, of course — just not in the way she thinks. For females in Saudi Arabia, Taleban-controlled Afghanistan and Islamic communities much closer to home, Gilead is not a reading at the National Theatre that makes you feel pleasantly indignant before you pick up an avocado and herb salad wrap at Pret. It’s the hateful, oppressive place where they live.

How can it be that western feminists read The Handmaid’s Tale without looking at a woman in a burka walking down the street and thinking: ‘Hang on, that’s what those bastards do to girls in Gilead?’ While women in Iran are thrown in jail daily for daring to remove the veil, their sisters in Europe and the US continue to be useful idiots for the fundamentalist brutes who try to keep them in the dark.

Atwood is far too great and wise a novelist not to grasp this contradiction. In The Testaments, she writes of the futility of a girl making a complaint of rape because her voice ‘counts for little or nothing… even with grown women, four female witnesses are the equivalent of one male’. What else is that but a reference to sharia law, where a woman’s testimony is worth half of a man’s? The new novel’s depiction of teenagers ‘present at school and then one day not present… disappeared from their former life’ is clearly about forced marriage. Last year, the UK’s Forced Marriage Unit gave support to 1,764 cases — a 47 per cent increase on the previous year. Summer is high season for Muslim schoolgirls being sent ‘home’ to marry whiskery old goats, which is why police and the border force launched Operation Limelight at Heathrow in July to scan flights from ‘countries of prevalence’ for ‘abuse, female genital mutilation and breast-ironing’.

Cutting off clitorises isn’t Booker-nominated dystopian fiction; it’s excruciating fact for British girls from Bradford to Bristol. And just look at Al-Hijrah school in Birmingham which is still...

Stories From A Beto Male...

Democrats say the Red Flag database cannot include gang databases

Democrats advanced a new measure this week to encourage states to pass “red flag” laws. These so-called extreme risk protection orders authorize removing guns and ammunition from individuals deemed as dangerous by some anonymous, unaccountable person, but it would not include the ready-made lists of gang members.

Republicans tried to add an amendment including known gang members, but the Democrats will not permit the inclusion of gang databases. It’s odd since gangs are the ones causing most of the so-called gun violence.

They would agree to include the names of white supremacists, but not other terror groups.

The House Judiciary rejected any effort by Republicans to include gang databases since they are worried about people mistakenly taken for a gang member. They brought up the ‘no-fly, no-buy’ list which was filled with inaccuracies, but Rep. Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican, who hoped to amend the measure to include gang databases, reminded the Democrats the restrictions for placing someone on a gang database are much tougher than the no-fly list.

“This is a situation where the police officers are trained, and there are very identifiable signs, and it isn’t just one sign,” Buck told Chair Jerrold Nadler.

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, of California, offered to support the amendment if Buck agreed to include those listed “individuals affiliated with white nationalism.”

Buck agreed, but said the language should include “any type of supremacy.”

“Let’s add Costa Nostra to this,” Buck added.

Democrats were uninterested and the amendment ultimately failed.

Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia called out Democrats for their hypocrisy, reminding the committee of a ‘sit-in’ on the House floor during which the GOP majority in 2016 could not conduct business until they passed, ‘no-fly, no-buy” to prevent people on the no-fly list from purchasing guns.

“It’s amazing to me,” Collins said. “We had a large blow-up on the floor of this House just a couple years ago about the No-Fly, No-Buy list, which was shown to have issues, but at that point, nobody from the other side brought this as a concern, and now we are bringing it as a concern,” Collins said.

“If we can’t bring this list up, even with the due process put in, then don’t ever bring the No-Fly, No-Buy list up again.”

“Don’t ever bring it up again because there is no due process on that list.”

IT’S MORE THAN HYPOCRITICAL, IT’S A VIOLATION OF OUR CIVIL RIGHTS

It’s more than hypocrisy, it’s the furtherance of a two-tiered justice system with only one party getting what they want.

The real irony here is that they won’t put gang members in the database but these same people aren’t the least bit concerned about reports by anyone about anyone. Joe Blow reports his neighbor, no problem, put him in the database. There is no problem with putting the mentally handicapped in the database as if all of them were a threat.

They also don’t care about due process and have taken the first step towards...

hate crime by destroying two of his own restaurants
  • Edwan Coughman, 31, was arrested on September 12 for allegedly wrecking two of his businesses to stage a hate crime and receive insurance money
  • Authorities responded to a burglary at Coughman's businesses in Gwinnett County, Georgia, on Wednesday around 9.30pm
  • The inside of the restaurants had racial slurs written in fresh black spray paint and TVs were stolen
  • Authorities found Coughman in an unlicensed car with suggestive evidence, including spray paint cans
  • Coughman was charged with false report of a crime, insurance fraud and concealing a license plate

A former NFL player was arrested by police for allegedly wrecking two of his own businesses to stage a fake hate crime and be eligible to receive insurance money.

Authorities from the Gwinnett County Police Department in Georgia responded to a ‘burglary in progress’ call around 9.30pm on Wednesday when a witness reported a man damaging businesses.

The two businesses, Create and Bake Restaurant and Coughman’s Creamery, belonged to former NFL player and local business owner Edwan Coughman.

Inside the businesses, officers found ‘monkey’, the n-word, ‘MAGA’ and swastikas scrawled on the walls in fresh black spray paint.

‘The smell of spray paint was very fresh. When officers touched it, the paint appeared wet,’ a news release from police said.

The cushions were reportedly sliced open, mirrors were broken, wires were cut, TVs were missing and the surveillance system was broken.

Coughman alleged that that his businesses were burglarized with racial slurs (pictured)

According to a news release, the witness told officers the suspect was driving a Chevrolet Silverado with no license plate.

Cpl. Michele Pihera told Gwinette Daily Post: ‘We believe he used that possibly not to have the truck or identity of the truck return back to him.'

After authorities dispatched to look for the suspicious vehicle saw one that matched the description leaving a shopping center.

Behind the wheel was Coughman.

Officers noticed several TVs both inside and in the bed of his truck that were still attached to brackets with damaged drywall.

Coughman was also wearing a pair of gloves, the Gwinette Daily Post reported.

The 31-year-old told authorities he realized his businesses had be burglarized earlier in the day, but contacted his insurance company instead of local police.
