Explosion rips through Russian lab housing smallpox, Ebola and plague

Firefighters have been battling a blaze covering 30 square metres which engulfed the facility after the blast

A massive gas explosion has sparked a fire at a Russian lab that houses viruses ranging from smallpox to Ebola, authorities have said.

The State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology has said a cylinder exploded in lab which is one of two places in the world that houses the smallpox disease which has been eradicated in the world.

Other highly lethal diseases that are stored there include Anthrax and Ebola.

Located in Koltsovo, in the Novosibirsk region of Siberia, the site is thought to be where biological weapons have been made.

Firefighter and rescue teams responded to the explosion before it was realised what the possible implications could be.

Russian media have reported that the “the situation was quickly upgraded from an ordinary emergency to a major incident”.

One worker suffered third-degree burns after the blast, which blew out the glass in the building.

Firefighters have been battling a blaze covering 30 square metres which engulfed the facility after the blast.

Dr. Joseph Kam, Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID) told CNN rules for storing viruses are very strict and highly dangerous diseases such as Ebola and smallpox would be stored in the highest "Level 4" laboratory.

Access to the samples would be limited, special containers are used and the storage mechanism is different from other laboratories, Kam said.

He added that while fire would be hot enough to destroy viruses, an explosion could risk spreading the virus and there would be a danger of infecting those in the room or contaminating the...

Epstein sex slave tried to swim shark-infested waters to escape...

Sarah Ransome says she was 22 when she was approached in a Manhattan bar by a woman who lured her into a trip to Jeffrey Epstein's Caribbean island CREDIT: DAN CALLISTER

After months of torture, suddenly there was a sliver of hope. Sarah Ransome saw the unattended quad bike, and jumped on it. She raced off, heading to a remote corner of the 70-acre Caribbean island. A strong swimmer, she planned to swim the several miles from the private island of Little St James back to the island of St Thomas.

“I had been raped three times that day,” she said. “A shark would have been my best friend at that point. I didn’t even think about it – it was just, get me away.”

She didn’t get very far.

Her host, Jeffrey Epstein, had installed video cameras all over the island, she said. Within minutes of her setting out a team had appeared to try and persuade her to return to the house.

She sought out New York-based lawyers David Boies and Sigrid McCawley and in 2017, Miss Ransome filed a lawsuit against Epstein, his confidante Ghislaine Maxwell, and three alleged assistants, claiming she was trafficked for sex over the course of seven months. Ms Maxwell denied the allegations and applied for a Motion to Dismiss the Claim.

The case was eventually settled out of court, but Miss Ransome is telling her full story for the first time in the wake of Epstein’s suicide to encourage other young women to come forward.

Her story highlights how Epstein would prey on vulnerable women, using them to expand his network around the world, and how she believes he cynically changed his tactics to target “older” women after he found himself under federal investigation.

The sad sequence of events that led Miss Ransome to Epstein’s door began in Johannesburg, where she was born to British parents. Her mother was the daughter of Lord Gordon Macpherson, the second baron of Drumochter; her father, to whom she remains close, left at an early age and moved to Cape Town.

When she was 14 she says she was raped by a wealthy schoolmate of her brother’s. The South African police dropped the case, the first time she was let down by the authorities, and the first time she attempted suicide.

She swapped South Africa for the Scottish Highlands, moving in with her aunt and uncle just south of Inverness and attending Grantown grammar school, in Grantown-on-Spey. “I thrived,” she said. “I was head girl. I still have the badge.”

Miss Ransome was accepted to university in Edinburgh, but the costs mounted up and, unable to afford to continue, she dropped out.

Needing to make a clean break after a tumultuous relationship, fashion school in New York beckoned.

“My passion was always the fashion industry,” she said. “I’m quite spontaneous. Pack my bag, tourist visa, thinking, yay, let’s do this. I was so young and...

Italian soldier stabbed at Milan central station, attacker reportedly shouted ‘Allahu akbar'

An Italian soldier was stabbed in the throat by an assailant who reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” outside the Central Station in Milan on Tuesday.

The alleged stabbing took place at approximately 10:45am local time. The soldier was struck in the neck and shoulder during the frenzied assault, Milano Today reports.

The attacker fled the scene in the direction of the Via Vittor Pisani but was quickly arrested by police at which point he shouted “Allahu Akbar.”

Police and military personnel quickly swarmed the scene and established a security cordon. Investigations are underway to determine if the incident was terrorism-related.

The 34-year-old soldier was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment where his condition was deemed non-life-threatening despite the deep wound to his neck.

The attacker, reportedly a foreign national, was armed with a pair of scissors and was...

Nation's Murderous Psychopaths Undecided On Whether They’ll Follow New Gun Laws

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Democrats such as Beto O’Rourke have proposed a number of new gun laws, such as universal background checks, a ban on magazines that hold more than ten bullets, and possibly even a “mandatory buyback” of some weapons such as AR-15s. While these laws are likely to be a headache for law-abiding gun owners, the nation’s murderous psychopaths aren’t quite certain how the laws will affect them.

“The background check sounds concerning,” explained deranged murderer Steve Mason, known as “Murdering Steve” to his friends. “I would definitely fail it since I’m a well-known psychopath. But I’ve never actually purchased a gun through a gun-dealer; I just steal all my murder weapons. And so far no one has proposed a background check on theft, so I think I’m good.”

Jake Foster, who is planning a shooting spree, expressed similar concerns about the ban on “high-capacity” magazines. “Having to do a shooting spree and reloading after every tenth shot does sound irritating,” said Foster. “Despite the law, I might just use a high-capacity magazine anyway. I guess the question is whether I’m willing to deal with a possible fine on top of the multiple counts of murder.”

One law murderous psychopaths did seem excited about was the AR-15 buyback. “If they offer a lot of money for my AR-15, it could be pretty worthwhile,” said nutjob Craig McGee. “Then I can use that money to buy more guns just as lethal... but through the black...

The Smearing Of Brett Kavanaugh Is An Attack On The Supreme Court

Destroying the institution is part of the plan.

Sure, it’s about partisanship and peddling books and selling newspaper subscriptions, but in the end, Democrats’ smearing of Brett Kavanaugh is also about delegitimizing the Supreme Court—the only institution that will inhibit the progressive agenda no matter who wins elections.

Conservatives justices aren’t merely wrong, they’re nefarious and racist and extremist, you see, so virtually anything Democrats do to try and stop them is now rationalized. In this world, the accused, rather than the accuser, bears the “burden of proof.” In this world hucksters like Michael Avenatti are turned into experts and major news outlets will eagerly repeat and spread slander as news.

This Sunday, The New York Times ran an excerpt from a new book, “The Education of Brett Kavanaugh,” in which reporters Robin Pogebrin and Kate Kelly not only rehashed allegations against Kavanaugh, but claimed that he’d been in another drunken incident in his college days.

My colleague Mollie Hemingway, co-author of a bestselling non-fiction book on the affair, had a copy of “The Education of Brett Kavanaugh” and noticed that the reporters had somehow failed to mention that the alleged victim had declined to be interviewed because she didn’t recall the incident. Whether dispositive or not, it seems like a noteworthy detail to skip in an excerpt accusing a Supreme Court justice of inappropriate sexual conduct.

We won’t even dwell on the fact that it was a liberal lawyer—one who happened to have been pitted against Kavanaugh during the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings—who opportunistically claims to have recalled this 35-year-old incident and reported it to the FBI. Jennifer Rubin and E.J. Dionne assure us he should be trusted.

In any event, the Times, caught in a blatantly unprofessional act, was forced to add an “editor’s note” that debunked the most newsworthy aspect of their own article. It was just another in an interminable series of “mistakes” by supposedly non-partisan journalists that happen to skew in the same exact partisan direction while creating...
