Is It Over? GOP Reportedly Has Votes To Block Witnesses In Early End To Impeachment
Hours after Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said Hunter Biden would be a "relevant witness" in President Trump's impeachment trial, Senate Republicans seem to think there aren't enough votes to call witnesses following a morning meeting between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) which lasted approximately 30 minutes.
According to The Hill, the meeting "was seen as a sign by several senators that Democrats will fail to convince four Republicans to join them in calling for witnesses. Without a vote to hear from witnesses, the trial could end as soon as Friday."
Murkowski, one of a handful of Senate Republicans thought to be leaning towards witnesses, appears to have changed her mind.
If Dianne Feinstein doesn't corner her in the hallway, that is...
"We’re going to get it done by Friday, hopefully," said Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) following a Senate GOP lunch meeting on Wednesday which was held after McConnell and Murkowski spoke.
"I think I can say the mood is good," said Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN), adding "If I had to guess, no witnesses."
"We’ll be in a place where I think everyone is going to have their mind made up and I believe that we’ll be able to move to a verdict and the witness question will be clear at that point," Braun added.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) - who has forcefully advocated for testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton after a leaked manuscript from his upcoming book claims President Trump directly tied Ukraine aid to investigations into the Bidens - said nothing after the lunch, which Murkowski did not attend.
Romney and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) are both expected to back witnesses. Murkowski has been seen as a third possible vote, though she had not announced any decision.
Instead of discussing the possibility of having former national security adviser John Bolton appear as a witness in the trial at Wednesday's meeting, lawmakers talked about voting Friday to move quickly to an up-or-down vote on...
Huawei Denies German Report It Colluded With Chinese Intelligence
BERLIN (Reuters) – Huawei [HWT.UL], the leading maker of telecoms network equipment, denied a newspaper report on Wednesday that alleged the German government was in possession of evidence that it had cooperated with Chinese intelligence.
“Huawei Technologies has never, and will never, do anything to compromise the security of networks and data of its customers,” the Chinese company said in response to the report in the Handelsblatt business daily.
“The Handelsblatt article repeats old, unfounded allegations without providing any concrete evidence whatsoever.”
The Handelsblatt report cited a confidential foreign ministry document that intelligence shared by U.S. officials represented a “smoking gun” that meant Chinese companies were unsafe partners for building next-generation 5G mobile networks.
“At the end of 2019, intelligence was passed to us by the U.S., according to which Huawei is proven to have been cooperating with China’s security authorities,” the newspaper cited the document as saying.
The German foreign ministry said it did not comment on internal documents as a matter of policy.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government and her conservative ruling party are split on whether Huawei’s equipment poses a security threat to Europe’s largest economy, where the three mobile network operators are all customers of the Chinese firm.
Britain on Tuesday decided to bar Huawei from the sensitive “core” of mobile networks, exclude it from strategically important sites, and cap its share in the network periphery at 35%.
The European Union on Wednesday published guidelines under which member countries can restrict or ban high-risk vendors, but stopped short of singling out...
Video: Angry Rand Paul Demands Trump Sue Schumer
“It’s defamation of character and he ought to go to court and be sued for it”
An uncharacteristically angry Senator Rand Paul slammed Chuck Schumer Tuesday, urging President Trump to sue the Democratic leader for defamation amidst the ongoing impeachment saga.
“I’m offended and shocked that Schumer would be so scurrilous as to accuse the president and his children of making money illegally off of politics when the only people we know have made money off of this have been Hunter Biden and Joe Biden,” Paul urged.

Charles Lieber, Harvard University, Wuhan China |
The head of Harvard University’s chemistry department has been arrested on charges related to his alleged ties to China’s communist government.
Charles Lieber, 60, is accused of lying to the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health about his participation in China’s Thousand Talents Program. The program was reportedly started by China in 2008 allegedly to entice U.S. scientists and researchers to improperly hand over U.S. research.

Under Lieber’s Thousand Talents program contract, prosecutors say Wuhan University of Technology in China paid $50,000 a month and provided Lieber with living expenses up to $158,000. Authorities say Lieber also received more than $1.5 million to set up a research lab at Wuhan University of Technology. In return, Lieber allegedly agreed to provide multiple services for the Chinese university including publishing articles and applying for patents.
Harvard has placed Lieber on indefinite administrative leave.

John Durham Appoints New Chief To Criminal Division: She’s ‘Done It All’
Top prosecutor John H. Durham, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut charged with leading the investigation into the origins of the FBI probe into President Donald Trump’s campaign, announced Monday that he has appointed a new Chief to serve in the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division.
Sarah P. Karwan will succeed William J. Nardini, who is currently serving as a U.S. Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the DOJ press release stated.
“I am thrilled that Sarah Karwan will lead our Criminal Division,” said Durham. “During her more than 12 years as an AUSA, Sarah has done it all, prosecuting violent criminals, drug traffickers, financial fraudsters, corrupt public officials, and a wide variety of other wrongdoers. Given the breadth of her experience and her exceptional lawyering skills, she certainly will be a standout as our new Criminal Chief.”
Durham’s team is reported to be small and very little has surfaced regarding what evidence has been collected in his probe, which was upgraded to a criminal investigation last month. Under a criminal investigation Durham has the ability to impanel a grand jury and serve indictments.
His probe is focused on senior FBI officials and in October, 2019 the Department of Justice announced the expansive nature of Durham’s investigation, stating that the investigation had expanded to overseas intelligence agencies, as well as the CIA.
Attorney General William Barr, who appointed Durham, said in an interview with NBC in December, that Durham “should spend just as much attention on the post-election period” noting that the probe will not just focus on the origins of the investigation. Barr said he asked Durham to look at the post Trump election because “of some of the stuff that Horowitz has uncovered which to me is inexplicable.”
Last month, after DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz released his report on the FBI’s handling of the Trump probe and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrants issued on short term campaign volunteer Carter Page, Durham issued a rare statement.
“Based on the evidence collected to date, and while our investigation is ongoing, last month we advised the Inspector General that we do not agree with some of the report’s conclusions as to predication and how the FBI case was opened,” said Durham, hinting that his team may have uncovered evidence that differentiated with some of Horowitz’s findings.
Horowitz revealed in his lengthy report that FBI officials involved in the warrant, to include FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith, omitted critical information on Page and altered emails used to obtain the warrant to spy on the campaign volunteer. The omission was significant because the CIA had confirmed to the FBI that Page was a CIA asset and had cooperated with the agency.
SaraACarter.com first reported that Durham’s investigation had also expanded to the Department of Defense’s Office of Net Assessment, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation. More importantly, Durham is looking at multiple contracts that were given to FBI informant Stefan Halper, the Cambridge professor who had contact with three...
