Intelligence Expert: Soleimani Was Planning to Take Americans Hostage in Iraq Embassy, Broker Sanctions Relief
CBN News has learned new details about the imminent threat that led to the killing of Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani.
The information came from Michael Pregent of the Hudson Institute, a well-connected Middle East intelligence expert who's also fought in that region.
During an interview with CBN News on Tuesday, Pregent said the so-called "chatter" regarding the situation could not be ignored.
"He was worse than Osama bin Laden. He was worse than Baghdadi. He was worse than Zarqawi," he said.
Last month President Trump ordered a drone strike that killed Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, another well-known terrorist.
"It was the best move we could have made," Pregent said.
Pregent said his sources provided a clear picture of the threat Soleimani posed to the US Embassy in Baghdad, making his demise a must.
"The chatter was they were going to do a 1979 hostage siege," Pregent told CBN News.
"They were going to take over the embassy, take all the Americans in the embassy hostage and then broker their release in exchange for sanctions relief," he explained.
While Soleimani was the main target, Pregent says the other terror leader killed in the strike would have also played a key role in the siege.
"The chatter was they were going to put Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in as prime minister," Pregent said. "So do a coup and then seize the embassy."
Pregent said when militia forces penetrated the embassy on Dec. 31, it was essentially a dress rehearsal for what was to come.

Actor Jussie Smollett is once again facing charges in Chicago in connection with a January 2019 police report in which he claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic hate crime.
Smollett was indicted by a grand jury on six disorderly conduct charges Tuesday, according to the office of Special Prosecutor Dan Webb. The 37-year-old actor is already facing a $130,000 lawsuit by the city of Chicago, the cost of the resources police and prosecutors claim it took to investigate Smollett's false charge.
"A Cook County grand jury returned a six-count indictment charging Jussie Smollett with making four separate false reports to Chicago Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing that he was not the victim of a crime," the office said in a statement Tuesday.
The former "Empire" star told police in January 2019 that he was attacked by two men who hurled racial and homophobic slurs at him and wrapped a rope around his neck at about 2 a.m. in the upscale neighborhood of Streeterville.

Chicago police initially said they were looking into the attack as an alleged hate crime, but were unable to find any video evidence of the incident. After police interviewed two persons of interest in the case, Nigerian brothers Ola and Abel Osundairo, authorities shifted the investigation into whether the actor paid the brothers to stage an assault.

Republican Devin Nunes warned that the layers of lies have unraveled in the putrid onion that was Robert Mueller’s investigation of the failed Russia-collusion hoax.
Congressman Nunes told Fox Business host Lou Dobbs that Americans will soon learn the disturbing depths of deceit and corruption perpetrated by the Mueller team to promote the Russia-collusion hoax.
