Why Height and Physical Stature Play a Role in American Politics

During one of the Republican presidential debates before the 2016 election, the web search company Google tracked what terms Internet users were searching for while watching on TV. The results were surprising.

The top search wasn't ISIS. It wasn't Barack Obama's last day. It wasn't tax plans.

It was: How tall is Jeb Bush?

The search analytics unearthed a curious fascination among the voting public: Americans, it turns out, are fascinated with how tall the presidential candidates are. And they tend to vote for the tallest candidates, according to historic election results and research into voter behavior.

So, do the tallest presidential candidates always win?

Taller Presidential Candidates Get More Votes

Taller presidential candidates have fared better through history. They haven't always won, but they were victorious in a majority of elections and the popular vote about two-thirds of the time, according to Gregg R. Murray, a Texas Tech University political scientist.

Murray's analysis concluded that the taller of the two major-party candidates from 1789 to 2012 won 58% of presidential elections and received the majority of the popular vote in 67% of those elections.

The notable exceptions to the rule include Democrat Barack Obama, who at 6 feet, 1 inch tall won the 2012 presidential election against Republican Mitt Romney, who was an inch taller. In 2000, George W. Bush won the election but lost the popular vote to a taller Al Gore.

Why Voters Favor Tall Presidential Candidates

Taller leaders are seen as stronger leaders, researchers say. And height has been particularly important in wartime. Consider Woodrow Wilson at 5 feet, 11 inches, and Franklin D. Roosevelt at 6 feet, 2 inches. “In particular, during times of threat, we have a preference for physically formidable leaders,” Murray told The Wall Street Journal in 2015.

In the research paper Tall claims? Sense and Nonsense About the Importance of Height of US Presidents, published in Leadership Quarterly, the authors concluded:

"The advantage of taller candidates is potentially explained by perceptions associated with height: taller presidents are rated by experts as 'greater', and having more leadership and communication skills. We conclude that height is an important characteristic in choosing and evaluating political leaders."
"Height is associated with some of the same perceptions and outcomes as is strength. For example, individuals with taller stature are perceived as better leaders and attain higher status within a wide variety of modern political and organizational contexts."

Trump’s ‘Real Challenge’ Is China Using ‘Corporate America as Proxies to Fight Their War’

China’s Communist Party uses “corporate America [and] Wall Street” as proxies in its war against America, said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert Spalding, author of Stealth War: How China Took Over While America’s Elite Slept and senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, in a Friday interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with host Rebecca Mansour and special guest host Ed Martin.

China procures the political support of American companies and institutions through financial incentives, explained Spalding, who reflected on his time in the Trump administration as a national security advisor to President Donald Trump.

“The real challenge that the president has — and this is what I tried to explain when I went to the White House in 2017, [and] as hard as the government might try to fix this problem — [is] the breadth of what the Chinese Communist Party is doing to incentivize corporate America and Wall Street to really be on their side,” Spalding stated.

Spalding noted the Pentagon’s dropping of opposition to the Trump administration’s efforts to halt U.S. chip and technology companies from supplying Huawei, China’s state-linked telecommunications giant.

“That is not because the federal government was lobbying for that,” said Spalding of the Pentagon’s shift in position. “It’s because companies like Qualcomm and Intel were lobbying for that. So the private sector, corporate America, Wall Street, they are pushing the government as hard as they can with all their lobbyists to get them to essentially abandon the trade war, to essentially abandon the enforcement measures that the president has put in place, because, quite frankly, their quarterly profits require this full engagement with the Chinese Communist Party.”

Spanding warned, “That’s how they win. They use Americans, and corporate America, and Wall Street as proxies to fight their war.”

China procures American corporations as political allies to lobby the federal government on its behalf, stated Spalding.

“When you’re dealing with Qualcomm and the Department of Defense, it’s much different than dealing with the Chinese Communist Party,” Spalding remarked. “So they come to the Department of Defense, seeming like an ally, when in reality they’re working as a proxy for the Chinese Communist Party, because that’s how China and the Chinese Communist Party has incentivized the...

North Dakota Group Wants to Recall County Commissioner for Trying to Flood the County with Third World Refugees

The Bismarck Tribune reported that an immigration patriot group in North Dakota is trying to unseat Burleigh County Commissioner Kathleen Jones via recall petition because of her efforts to resettle refugees in the county.

The petition being filed against Jones demands that Jones be recalled for “the reasons of contempt of the voters and negligence in office.” This petition lists a five-person sponsoring committee to give voters an idea of the political event that took place.

Back in December, the county commission voted 3-2 to let Lutheran Social Services continue resettling refugees in Burleigh County. This meeting was called in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump that allowed states and counties to determine their own resettlement policies. Last month, the commission voted 3-2 to discard the use of a non-binding straw poll to determine if Burleigh voters want to continue taking in refugees.

Recall organizer Robert Field informed the Bismarck Tribune that commissioners Jones, Jerry Woodcox and Mark Armstrong’s votes for refugee resettlement and against using a straw poll to decide the matter in the future were the main catalysts behind the group’s decision to start organizing a petition.

Per North Dakota state law, recall petitions are limited to one official.

In Field’s view, Jones “was the easiest target.”

Jones, who has been in office since 2014, believes she is being singled out due to her gender.

In order to get a recall election going, the recall group must...
