I must respectfully disagree with kai. The idiots who raised the minimum wage probably thought they were helping the "poor" at the expense of the "rich". They probably thought they had good intentions but had NO CLUE what the ramifications of their actions would be. A raise in the minimum wage will ALWAYS result in fewer jobs and higher prices, EVERY TIME. The morons who passed this legislation are just too dumb to understand econ. 101. Minimum wage jobs were NEVER intended to be a living wage. These jobs were for youths to get real-world experience while they trained for jobs that would actually provide a living wage.
Something often overlooked by consumers is that jacking up the minimum wage is a boondoggle for the government. The higher wages mean increased income and payroll taxes, and fewer people qualifying for government assistance programs (and no lowering of the funds available to those programs). So there is a decided upside for the government to raise the minimum wage and zero downside.
