The Coddling of the American Mind

"Sticks and Stones may break my bones, by words are micro-aggressions and trigger warnings that should limit your free speech" - anonymous liberal leftist

Something strange is happening at America’s colleges and universities. A movement is arising, undirected and driven largely by students, to scrub campuses clean of words, ideas, and subjects that might cause discomfort or give offense. Last December, Jeannie Suk wrote in an online article for The New Yorker about law students asking her fellow professors at Harvard not to teach rape law—or, in one case, even use the word violate (as in “that violates the law”) lest it cause students distress. In February, Laura Kipnis, a professor at Northwestern University, wrote an essay in The Chronicle of Higher Education describing a new campus politics of sexual paranoia—and was then subjected to a long investigation after students who were offended by the article and by a tweet she’d sent filed Title IX complaints against her. In June, a professor protecting himself with a pseudonym wrote an essay for Vox describing how gingerly he now has to teach. “I’m a Liberal Professor, and My Liberal Students Terrify Me,” the headline said. A number of popular comedians, including Chris Rock, have stopped performing on college campuses (see Caitlin Flanagan’s article in this month’s issue). Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Maher have publicly condemned the oversensitivity of college students, saying too many of them can’t take a joke.

Two terms have risen quickly from obscurity into common campus parlance. Microaggressions are small actions or word choices that seem on their face to have no malicious intent but that are thought of as a kind of violence nonetheless. For example, by some campus guidelines, it is a microaggression to ask an Asian American or Latino American “Where were you born?,” because this implies that he or she is not a real American. Trigger warnings are alerts that professors are expected to issue if something in a course might cause a...

Obama Administration Supports Modern Day Slavery in Vietnam and Malaysia

In a Senate Committee on Foreign Relations hearing on August 6, Senators from both parties accused the Obama Administration of putting its Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) goals ahead of Malaysia’s modern-day slavery; however, this was just half of the equation. A coalition of national and international organizations in Asia has charged both Vietnam and Malaysia with “Modern Day Slavery” -- Vietnam for its “blood cashews” and Malaysia for its oil palm industry; both are engaged in state-sponsored human-trafficking and indentured servitude. However, they are being rewarded by the US State Department that pretends these countries have “demonstrated sufficient progress on human rights” despite the fact that both have repeatedly “come under fire for paltry efforts” to reduce human rights abuses.

In the blood cashew industry, political prisoners are forced to work seven hours a day for $3 a month, for as long as seven years -- often resulting in serious injuries and even blindness -- to produce cashews to export to the US and other countries, an industry that brings Vietnam $1.5 Billion (US) per year.

The State Department conducts foreign policy by supporting the Administration’s flavor of the month, and removes the names of favored countries from sanction lists based on their assurances, without hard evidence of “significant progress.” This brings to mind the idiom, “A leopard doesn’t change its spots.” The abusers simply change their actions from overt to covert while preventing outsiders from access to areas and...

Salon: Mouthpiece of the Racist Left

By Matthew VadumThe racist Left has found a home at the radical commentary website, Salon, which routinely and viciously attacks conservatives and other patriotic Americans for their beliefs while promoting racist causes like the Black Lives Matter movement.

Salon is the voice of the violent mob in the street; at times it makes the small-c communist Nationmagazine seem like a bastion of common sense. Its contributors claim white people, especially conservatives, emerge from the womb hating black people. To reinforce this ugly lie, Salon tries to silence those who threaten the Left and the racial-grievance industry. Salon was so desperate to slime the highly effective conservative investigative journalist James O’Keefe in 2010 that it published a sophomoric error-strewn hit piece by pseudo-journalist Max Blumenthal. Even the left-wing Columbia Journalism Review slapped down Salon and Blumenthal.

Nowadays Salon publishes morally reprehensible full-throated defenses of the increasingly violent Black Lives Matter movement whose supporters now openly endorse murdering cops and waging “war” against America. Salon cheered on the rioters in Baltimore and Ferguson, Mo., accepting as gospel the idea that blacks like Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, and Trayvon Martin were murdered by racist white people running wild. Black violence is routinely dismissed at Salon because...

The Questions John Kerry Should Demand Cuba Answer

There is a strong likelihood that when Secretary John Kerry raises the American flag in Havana this Friday, he will meet with General Raul Castro or other Cuban government officials who continue to support the FARC, a Colombian terrorist group.

Neither Kerry nor President Obama want to ask embarrassing questions.

The Washington Post recently called attention to Obama’s efforts not to raise significant issues that could derail the legacy he seeks by his approach to Raul Castro’s regime: “Tricky negotiations in the wake of the Cuba thaw”. The Post said “As the Obama administration has pursued normalization with Cuba, it has been drawn into lower-profile but thorny dialogues with two of Havana’s long-standing clients: the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro and Colombia’s Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC).”

The infamous relationship between the FARC and Raul Castro’s regime is nothing new and we’re not talking about ancient history.

At a Congressional hearing on June 24th, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., asked Special Envoy Bernard Aronson who had just returned from Cuba about a Cuba-bound Chinese ship loaded with weapons that was intercepted by the Colombian navy.

The ship was scheduled to dock in two Colombian ports: Cartagena and Baranquilla, and the weapons manufactured in China were of the same type used by the Colombian terrorists.

The weapons were purchased by Raul Castro, but in a telling detail they were shipped under tons of cereal.

The issue of the smuggling operation is a matter of no interest to Obama, because if, as it is likely, the weapons were meant to increase terrorist violence in Colombia, the administration’s decision to remove Cuba from the list of countries supporters of terrorism would have been impossible to defend.

Thus the unwillingness of the administration to ask questions can only be...
