Governor Jerry Brown Quietly Admits Trump Was Right, Eases California Logging Rules
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Brown is proposing one of the most significant changes to the state's logging rules in nearly half a century.
"Gov. Jerry Brown is proposing broad new changes to California’s logging rules that would allow landowners to cut larger trees and build temporary roads without obtaining a permit as a way to thin more forests across the state," the paper reports.
Environmentalists in California aren't on board. They've been pushing for years to make California's logging rules more restrictive, not less, but in the wake of the deadly forest fires that ripped through the state this month, prominent lawmakers believe a change must be made before more people die from a preventable situation.
"Under Brown’s proposal, private landowners would be able to cut trees up to 36 inches in diameter — up from the current 26 inches — on property 300 acres or less without getting a timber harvest permit from the state, as long as their purpose was to thin forests to reduce fire risk," the Sentinel reports. "They also would be able to build roads of up to 600 feet long without getting a permit, as long as they repaired and replanted them."
Forests, particularly in northern California, California lawmakers admit, have become dangerously overgrown. But there's currently little incentive for landowners to clear their trees — they are only allowed to clear dead and decaying wood and undergrowth and can't clear healthy tress. By allowing landowners to recover some money from the process — letting them create and sell lumber, for instance — it could incentivize them to make bigger changes.
Environmentalists say they're worried landowners will go way too far, cutting down ancient redwoods or clear-cutting property, but even the most ardent environmentalist admits that some thinning is needed.

Watch Dan Crenshaw Beat Down Media’s Wild Hyperbole About Trump ‘Undermining Democracy’
Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” representative-elect Dan Crenshaw calmly exposed the bankruptcy of wild and never-ending claims that President Trump is a threat to democracy, enemy of the press, fascist dictator, yadda yadda yadda.
Another incoming representative, Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), claimed on the show that, “Some of our democratic freedoms and the principles that we live by have been under attack for the better part of two years.”
“What democratic freedoms have been undermined?” Crenshaw (R-Texas) responded. “We just had an election where we switched power in the House, democracy is at work, people are voting in record numbers.” Crenshaw said whenever people make “this broad-brush criticism that the president is somehow undermining democracy,” he wants to hear examples of what they mean.
The entire panel erupted. Incoming freshman Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Penn.) listed off “judiciary, CIA, FBI, the voting process” and “undermining the free press,” which Neguse echoed.
“How has he done that?” Crenshaw asked. “The Obama administration had many press members under investigation, Trump has not, so what is the difference here?”
Neguse then mentioned the White House’s revocation of Jim Acosta’s press credentials after Acosta swatted away a White House intern trying to retrieve his mic. He characterized it as CNN “having to go to court to essentially regain access to the [White House] press room.”

Selfie saves Texas man from serving up to 99 years in prison
Cristopher "CJ" Precopia faced 99 years in prison for a violent crime he said he didn't commit -- and only a photo he took of himself was able to clear his name.
Precopia, 21, of Williamson County, said he was confused when police arrested him on Sept. 22, 2017. Officials said his ex-girlfriend, who was not named, claimed Precopia broke into her home, assaulted her and then slashed an “X” into her chest with a box cutter during a brutal Sept. 20 attack, KVUE reported.
Precopia said he couldn’t recall the last time he spoke to the woman, whom he dated in high school.

His parents posted the $150,000 bond and then set out on a mission to prove his innocence.
Cristopher's mother, Erin Precopia, remembered the evening of the alleged attack she was with her son at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. She also had proof – a selfie taken at 7:02 p.m. CST. The accuser told authorities she was attacked at 7:20 p.m. at her Bell County residence -- about 70 miles from the hotel where Precopia was with his mother.
Precopia’s lawyer, Rick Flores, told the Washington Post his client was lucky he had a “rock-solid alibi.”
“He was very fortunate that she chose a date and time that he just happened to have a rock-solid alibi for,” Flores said. “He and I have talked many times about how lucky he is, whether you believe in a higher power or good old-fashioned luck.”
On June 21, the charge was dropped after Flores provided the evidence to the district attorney’s office.
"We are always willing to listen and examine new information, and that's exactly what we did in this case,” Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza said.
Precopia's accuser has not been charged with a crime, KVUE reported.

Midterm Exit Poll: Majority of Swing Voters, Republicans Support Border Wall
The vast majority of Republican voters and more than 53 percent of swing voters in the recent midterm elections support President Donald Trump’s most central promise: The construction of a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Exit polling conducted by Zogby Analytics for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) reveals the vast majority of Republican voters — more than 80 percent — support the construction of a border wall along the southern border. Less than five percent of Republicans oppose a border wall.
Meanwhile, a majority of about 53.3 percent of swing voters in the midterm elections support Trump’s proposed border wall to stop illegal immigration into the country. A plurality of more than 47 percent of all midterm election voters said they support the construction of a border wall.
Despite running on a promise to stem the inflow of illegal aliens into the U.S., illegal immigration at the border has steadily continued, with nearly 51,000 border crossers being apprehended in the last month alone.
