Northern Border Sees Overwhelming Surge Of Illegal Immigrants

Flood of illegal immigrants at U.S.-Canada border puts strain on law enforcement already overwhelmed down south

Illegal border crossings from Canada into the United States have spiked by the thousands this fiscal year, according to internal Department of Homeland Security memos obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

From October 2022 to this month, the U.S.-Canadian border has seen a flood of illegal aliens, putting strain on law enforcement resources already overwhelmed down south. The memos obtained by the Free Beacon detail that law enforcement has apprehended more than 3,200 illegal immigrants who entered the United States from Canada outside of ports of entry in the 2023 fiscal year, which began in October—more than any previous year on record.

Customs and Border Protection recorded 2,238 migrant encounters on the U.S.-Canadian border in all of fiscal year 2022 and 916 the previous year. Every month of the 2023 fiscal year has been record-breaking for northern illegal border entries and there is no sign of the pace slowing any time soon.

The White House earlier this month directed two dozen CBP staff, some of whom were stationed at the southern border, to stations near the Canadian border. The move was described by the agency as a response to migrants traveling first to Canada from Mexico in order to more easily illegally cross into the United States.

"The situation at the southern border has spilled across all borders," a senior DHS official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said. "Law enforcement is already dealing with increased traffic at sea and the northern border has been slowly percolating as an area for drug traffickers and criminal groups to exploit. Prioritizing processing over enforcement has led to DHS diverting resources at our northern border to handle historic numbers in the south, and bad actors are only too happy to take advantage of us with our pants down."

Both the DHS memos and publicly available data show the most vulnerable section of the northern border is the Swanton Sector, which includes all of Vermont and counties in New York and New Hampshire that border Canada. DHS estimates that the Swanton Sector has seen a more than 2,000 percent increase in illegal border crossings since the beginning of the fiscal year. More than 60 percent of all illegal border crossings from Canada have been detected in that sector.

As the northern border becomes more chaotic, Border Patrol has been left scrambling. Only roughly 2,000 Border Patrol agents are stationed by the Canadian border. At any time, a Border Patrol agent who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, just 450 agents are ever on duty. Border Patrol stationed on the northern border, the agent said, do not have the resources, such as drones or fencing, like agents in Texas and Arizona.

House Republicans held a hearing Tuesday morning about security on the northern border, which featured immigration experts and the Border Patrol union president. Both Republicans and witnesses alleged that cartels and other smugglers are taking advantage of a lack of attention towards the Canada-U.S. border as immigration authorities grapple with the unprecedented flood of illegal aliens coming from...

QAnon Shaman Jacob Chansley is released 14 months early from prison after Jan. 6 footage showed him being 'ESCORTED' by cops inside the Capitol

  • Jacob Chansley, 35, was released on Thursday after serving 27 months in prison
  • He had been sentenced to 41 months after pleading guilty in September 2021
  • His move to a halfway house appears to be routine under federal guidelines
The so-called 'QAnon Shaman' who pleaded guilty to storming the US Capitol on January 6 has been released from prison to a halfway house 14 months early, in an apparent reduction for good behavior.

Jacob Chansley, 35, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to civil disorder and violent entry to the Capitol, among other charges, and was later sentenced to 41 months in federal prison.

Earlier this week, Chansley was transferred from FCI Stafford federal prison in Arizona to community confinement in the Phoenix area, after serving just under 27 total months in prison, a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) spokesman confirmed in a statement to DailyMail.com on Thursday.

The spokesman declined to comment on the reason for the transfer, but pointed generally to federal laws that allow for good-conduct sentence reductions, as well as release to a halfway house for the final 12 months of a sentence.

Chansley's release comes weeks after his former attorney demanded he be freed in light of new video from the Capitol riot, but his move to the halfway house appears to be unconnected.

A former federal prosecutor unconnected with the case said it was doubtful public pressure played a role in Chansley's transfer, noting the move appears 'kind of routine' under BOP guidelines.

'For safety, and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any inmate, including transfers or release plans, nor do we specify an individual's specific location while in community confinement,' the BOP spokesman said.

'Community confinement' can refer to either house arrest or a halfway house, but Chansley's former attorney said that he had been moved to a halfway house.

The Bureau of Prison confirmed that Chansley is in the custody of the Residential Reentry Management field office in Phoenix, which contracts with halfway houses to help inmates prepare to reenter society. His release date is set for May 25.

Federal inmates can receive a 15 percent reduction in their prison sentence for good behavior behind bars, and can also serve the final 12 months of their sentences in halfway houses at the discretion of the Bureau of Prisons.

With his elaborate garb and face paint, Chansley became known as the face of the riot on January 6, 2021, in which supporters of former President Donald Trump illegally entered the US Capitol and temporarily disrupted the certification of Joe Biden's election to the presidency.

In a statement to DailyMail.com, Albert S. Watkins, the attorney who handled Chansley's plea and sentencing, applauded his transfer to a halfway house.

'After serving eleven months in solitary prior to his sentence being imposed, and only 16 months of his sentence thereafter, it is appropriate this gentle and intelligent young man be permitted to move forward with the next stage of what undoubtedly will be a law abiding and enriching life,' said Watkins.

'I applaud the decision of the US Bureau of Prison in this regard,' added Watkins.

Watkins declined to speculate on the reason for Chansley's early release, saying: 'This was a decision of the US Bureau of Prisons. I cannot speak for the US Bureau of Prisons.'

In recent weeks, prominent figures including billionaire Elon Musk had called for Chansley's release, citing new footage that appeared to show him being 'escorted' by cops inside the Capitol during the riot.

However, former federal prosecutor Neama Ramani, the president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told DailyMail.com that it was unlikely the intense scrutiny on Chansley's case had any impact on his early release.

'I don't think it has anything to do with...

America’s Banana Republic Era Is Here: Manhattan Grand Jury Votes To Indict Trump

Democrats’ years-long “get Trump” campaign culminated on Thursday when a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict the former president.

Instead of devoting the time to keeping violent criminals off of New York City’s streets, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg recently decided to manufacture justification to go after former President Donald Trump for using his personal lawyer at the time to pay $130,000 to on-screen prostitute Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election.

If Bragg gets his way, Trump could face jail time over a case that Bragg, the Department of Justice, Bragg’s predecessor, and the Federal Election Commission previously decided not to pursue.

Specific charges and potential punishment for Trump have yet to be released but the fact that a felony indictment was even handed down opens the door for political prosecutions to become the norm in the U.S. Specifically, partisan operations against Republicans but not Democrats who have engaged in the same kinds of behavior.

The decision comes just two weeks after Trump predicted that he would be arrested in the coming days. Once the grand jury officially announced the indictment, Trump denounced the decision as “weaponizing our justice system to punish a political opponent.”

“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” Trump said in a statement. “From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats- the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country- have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement.”
As legal scholars and pundits have explained, the charge Bragg likely planned to bring against Trump would technically be a misdemeanor that is subject to a two-year statute of limitations and carries no serious ramifications other than fines. Considering Democrats’ vendetta against...
