Can't speak for all but... Pain is one of the finest teachers, and even friends. It either helps you learn not to fall, etc., or it suggests one finds another... hobby. Risk assessment can be taught by no finer teacher. Read all the books you want, nothing says you are doing it wrong like bruises, cuts, and maybe a visit to the emergency room. Heck, I don't need painkillers for just stitches these days, even as weakened as my health is. Unless it's a serious one, both wide and deep, while going into and out of shock. Yum!
