This made me think of a log cabin a friend bought in rural (joke if you wish) West Virginia, where the interior walls were lined with about 3 layers of newspaper. I suppose it was the cheapest form of insulation they could afford at the time (sorry I didn't note the dates on the papers, I think they were from the forties). Anything to keep the draft out helped.
