One of the oldest photos of the Great Sphinx, from 1880

I remember hearing a story about a German tank squad blowing the nose off the Sphinx during WWII and that is the reason why the nose was gone.  Myth apparently.

  1. I thought it was a French Artillery crew during Napoleons Egyptian campaign.

  2. Scratch that. A little research showed it was a Muslim Sheik who had the nose removed more than likely. There are drawings of the sphinx without a nose from 1737 as well. Long before Napoleons time.

    1. Yeah, I guess there are a lot of old myths... I think I heard that one before the internets came along and information was only in the form of a book or periodical...

    2. The Germans never got closer than 100 miles when they were stopped at El-Alamein in October of 1942.

  3. Yea the internet where "You can only believe 50% of the internet 30% of the time."- Abraham Lincoln

  4. I've a Mandela Effect like memory of seeing motion picture footage of the Sphinx's nose getting blown off.

Near as I've been able to find, it's a totally made up recollection.
