One of the oldest photos of the Great Sphinx, from 1880
I remember hearing a story about a German tank squad blowing the nose off the Sphinx during WWII and that is the reason why the nose was gone. Myth apparently.
Scratch that. A little research showed it was a Muslim Sheik who had the nose removed more than likely. There are drawings of the sphinx without a nose from 1737 as well. Long before Napoleons time.
Yeah, I guess there are a lot of old myths... I think I heard that one before the internets came along and information was only in the form of a book or periodical...

Near as I've been able to find, it's a totally made up recollection.
