If you know the Civil War, you've heard of the Knights of the Golden Circle.
For those who wondered what the Golden Circle might have been, it was a proposed addition to the US encompassing Mexico (we took about half of it in the Mexican War), all of Central America, almost all of the Caribbean, the countries on the north and west coasts of South America, Bolivia, and a nice piece of the Brazilian (how many in a Brazilian?) coast.
Most of those places were sparsely populated, so they'd have been a lot better off.
