I'll never forget the photo of a line around the block of the police station of Brits duly turning in their guns after the government ordered it. I guarantee you will never see an image like that of Americans waiting in a line to obey confiscation orders.
In a free country you never have to demonstrate a "need" to anyone for anything, not the government, not some twit on twitter, not some idiot in who lives under a monarchy and can't seem to understand the magna carta (yes, it's difficult, but you can figure it out).
