This is not a knock on gardens or gardeners. If you want to grow your own food or if you just enjoy being outside digging around in the dirt that's great, by all means. You could even get good at it and save money while having some super fresh produce, win-win.

But don't do it so that you can pretend that you're preparing for a food crisis or anarchy or any other SHTF scenario. If the current food supply and transportation system breaks down, chaos will engulf urban areas first, but people will start heading out of the cities in a hurry. Riots, violence, death and destruction will make sure of that.

Eventually, unless you are truly way TF out in the middle of nowhere, you will have to deal with desperately hungry refugees. Many of whom will be armed and a few of them aren't going to have a problem killing you and your family if you're the only thing between them and their first meal in a week.

So, unless you're going to grow enough to feed the small army you're going to need do defend your little food supply, don't kid yourself into thinking that your garden is going to get you through a food crisis of any length. That picturesque, lush, vegetable plot is just going to be a big target on your back.

Again, I'm all for gardening for fun or to supplement your food budget or for just general good eating. It's just not going to save you in any serious way if things go sideways.

Matthew is correct, imho.

I too agree with the comments above. Due to the infirmities of age I gave up gardening and just planted wildflowers. I'm certain if the SHTF the marauding foragers will see I'm peaceful after eyeing my flowers.

If not, I am prepared to place two shots to center body mass and one to the head.
Peace be upon you.

Peace.
What a foreign concept that is today.
