When I see things like that NPR Tweet, I think this is the sign of people who have no real problems. If you think a real problem in life is what color someone uses for an emoji, you life is pretty damned good.

Isn't the color of the thumbs up emoji a function of the local settings? If I send you a "green" thumbs up (because that is the font *I* selected), it will show up on your computer based on the font *you* selected. Anyone who thinks that is racist needs to step off the world stage and enter a psychiatric ward.
