CHINA. Beijing. April to June 1989. Student protesters erect a statue called the goddess of democracy in Tiananmen Square. The statue, which resembled the Statue of Liberty, represented the students’ demands for freedom and democracy.
In response, the Communist Party declared martial law and, between June 3 and 4, opened fire on protestors to regain control of the area, killing somewhere between a few hundred and several thousand. The most famous image from the massacre was of Tank Man, an unidentified man who stepped in front of a tank and stopped it in its tracks.
