An Ohio man pleaded guilty Tuesday to crimes related to his plot to launch a terrorist attack on a July 4 event in Cleveland last year.
Demetrius Nathaniel Pitts, 50, pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, placing threats against the president of the United States and threats against the president’s family members, the Justice Department said in a statement.
AUTHORITIES HAD BEEN MONITORING PITTS SINCE 2017 AFTER HE EXPRESSED A DESIRE TO RECRUIT PEOPLE TO KILL AMERICANS AND SAID HE WANTED TO MEET WITH AN AL QAEDA “BROTHER.” HE WAS ULTIMATELY INTRODUCED TO AN UNDERCOVER FBI AGENT WHO PITTS BELIEVED WAS A MEMBER OF THE TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.
“I’m trying to figure out something that would shake them up on the 4th of July,” Pitts said, according to an affidavit of the case. “What would hit them at their core? Blow up in the, have a bomb blow up in the 4th of July parade.”
Pitts later conducted reconnaissance in downtown Cleveland, taking pictures of areas he was considering as targets.
A review of a phone Pitts gave the FBI official included two videos in which he pledged allegiance to al Qaeda and four videos of him pointing out potential targets such as the federal building, the Coast Guard station and St. John’s Cathedral, which he said could be taken “off the map.”
“And I’m gonna be downtown when — when the thing go off. I’m gonna be somewhere cuz I wanna see it go off,” Pitts, who intended to use a truck bomb similar to that used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, told the...

ICE agents arrest 19 ‘ghost’ illegal immigrants who escaped prosecution
ICE agents targeting “ghost” illegal immigrants who eluded prosecution on drug charges — including peddling heroin and fentanyl — arrested 19 suspects in a four-day sweep around Boston that wrapped up Tuesday.
All 19 face being deported, or held accountable for drug charges against them, after being taken into custody in South Boston, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and in Brockton, Lawrence and Lowell.
“It was all part of an operation to focus on the opioid crisis mainly in Suffolk County,” said Todd Michael Lyons, New England Field Office deputy director for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Lyons said ICE agents used fingerprint matches to help track down the suspected drug runners as they circled back to their homes. Some, he added, had already been deported and many were wanted for trafficking in the deadly synthetic opiate fentanyl.
“Finding 19 was good work by sitting and waiting. A lot of it is just chasing ghosts,” Lyons said of the arrests. “They were going back into the city and trying to blend back in.”
He also knocked sanctuary city policies — including Boston’s Trust Act — that allow local authorities to release illegal immigrant suspects back onto the streets without notifying federal authorities first.
“Many politicians are focusing on the opioid epidemic but not the strategic use of law enforcement that must go along with it,” Lyons said, adding many of the suspected drug dealers at Dominican who get the heroin and fentanyl from Mexican drug cartels.
The sweep also hit as the Drug Enforcement Administration warned Monday that Mexican drug cartels are manufacturing mass quantities of fentanyl-laced, counterfeit prescription pills that are showing up on Massachusetts streets.
Based on a sampling of tablets seized from traffickers and street dealers nationwide from January to March of this year, the DEA found that 27% contained fentanyl.
In Massachusetts, agents examined 6 different samples of the suspected Mexico-made tablets carrying between 0.6 and 1.2 mg of fentanyl per tablet, according to...

How Trump Is Reshaping the Courts
President Donald Trump’s two Supreme Court picks, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, may be his highest-profile judicial nominations, but they are just two of the 157 men and women who have reshaped the federal judiciary.
“One out of every 4 active judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals have been appointed by President Trump,” says Adam Kennedy, deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of communications at the White House, in an interview with The Daily Signal. “And the average age is actually a full 10 years younger for these justices than under President [Barack] Obama.”
Trump celebrated his administration’s judicial appointments at a White House ceremony Wednesday. He gathered with U.S. senators and other supporters to mark the occasion. Kennedy spoke to The Daily Signal about Trump’s success and also provided an update on impeachment. Read the lightly edited transcript of the interview below, or listen on the podcast.
Rob Bluey: We’re joined on The Daily Signal Podcast by Adam Kennedy, deputy assistant to the president and deputy director of communications at the White House. Adam, thanks for taking the time to do the interview.
The demand for socialism is on the rise from young Americans today. But is socialism even morally sound? Find out more now >>
Adam Kennedy: Thanks so much for having me on.
Bluey: We’re going to get to impeachment in just a few moments, but first, Adam, I want to ask you about some news that doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.
Since President Trump took office, this administration has worked with Congress to confirm 157 federal judges. Again, that’s 157 federal judges. It includes 43 judges to federal circuit courts and two new justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. Can you tell us why this is a priority for President Trump?
Kennedy: I think what we’re doing really is reshaping the courts of this country that have long been dominated by Democratic appointees.
Right now … 1 out of every 4 active judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals have been appointed by President Trump. And the average age is actually a full 10 years younger for these justices than under President [Barack] Obama. So I think what the president is doing is putting a lasting stamp on...
