He shot through a laminated insulated glass unit (LIGU) as the aftermath pictures very clearly show. The inner layer of these hotel curtainwall glass units is tempered inboard so once shot it completely evacuates and the outer pane is a laminated unit comprised of heart-strengthened that offers a very exact break pattern. HS does not evacuate that's why we glass engineers use it for exterior. Do I know what I'm talking about = yes just look up on any search engine "thomas the glass expert".
