Mike,
Thanks for that. Really a great read!
Lovely and horrible at once. Truly, the ghastly connectedness of grief and beauty is what moves and makes our humanity.
Take time, it is usually worth it.
I worked offshore for many years, when I failed a forced air respirator test I knew I needed to come ashore and find a new career. So I got into taxis. Why not right? Years offshore meant years in the back of a cab, and years of learning how not to be an operator.
So I started with the banana boats (yellow), then ran as an owner operator with the oldest company in town, became a taxi manager with a new outfit in town and then eventually ended up starting my own cab business.
This put me at odds with some very hard nosed and shady characters. A big rival company who did not like me taking over downtown with my little five cab operation decided to try and run me out of business.
That did not work. I was in Andrew in a 125 ft offshore tug, and the no name storm (Storm of the Century), you can't scare me. So after trying everything including hiring a bunch of ex-hockey players to try and lay hands on me he finally closed his doors in a defeat. A 35 cab operation brought down by his own ineptness and uncaring policies.
Before he closed his doors forever he came shuffling over to my cab on 5th ave, his hands in his pocket and his head hanging in defeat. He honestly wanted to know how I beat him.
I said you know that little old lady that uses her dead husband's putter for a cane? The one who goes every week to Steinmart for 3.50 on the meter, pays in quarters and apologizes profusely that she can not afford to tip you?
Last week I found her on the side of the road struggling to carry her groceries up her condo steps one bag at time while leaning on that putter, because your driver dropped her on the curb like a sack of garbage!
He said, “Come on, you telling me your drivers don’t mind carrying her bags up two fights of stairs for half of 3.50 and no tip?”
I said, “My drivers bought her a cane.”
I had a similar experience with caring for my in-laws. I impressed on my kids to go see them as often as they could. All 3 made it a priority growing up for which I am thankful.
I know exactly how wonderful and thankful that taxi driver feels. I tell young people to talk to old people because they know stuff and taught me well.
You made my day Mike with that one. Soon I am off to do work for God. I am on the mow team and I love my tractor time talking to Him.
