Why do they always put a helipad next to the SatComm dishes? Ever chopper that comes in or goes out causes lots of data errors.
They had a heli pad next to the satellite dishes at camp Victory Iraq. I was in the 3ID chow hall and there were some chopper pilots sitting at the table behind us. They were the Black Widow squadron out of Savannah. Someone of my group made the comment that 3 Blackhawks caused some high rate of data errors that morning. I loudly replied that was a stupid act as we were pumping 4 jigawats of forward power and that had to be frying their nuts. The pilots behind us were quiet. Two hour later I was in front of the head 3ID communications officer getting grilled about how much transmission power we were pumping out. For the rest of their tour all of the Blackhawk pilots would drop in over the road staying about 20 feet off the ground to avoid the SatCom beams. I ran into the Black Widows 4 years later in Salerno Afghanistan where I became a honorary member because I set up their civilian satellite dish internet. I did watch them for 2 days struggling with it. It took about 2 hours to fix three problems that kept them off the air.
