We used to be able to buy mercury (and other chemicals) at the drugstore to augment our Gilbert chemistry sets. Fun stuff. Silver dimes would soak up the mercury and get real shiny. To get some of it back, you would tap the dime really hard on a flat surface. When they stopped selling it to us, we had to break open thermometers, thermostats and 'silent' light switches. Life in the 50s and 60s - good times.

"Me, too!" I couldn't tell you how many thermometers met their end in my room. And what about the millions of people that got dental fillings with mercury amalgams, like the silver coins you mention?

The other thing about that one that annoyed me, probably because of studying chemistry after all those chemistry sets, is tying the vaccine to the metallic element mercury. When it's reacted with another chemical that ends up in a vaccine, Those Are Not The Same Thing. They have to be tested completely differently.

I think the American flag over the ruins photo is Berlin 1945. The soldiers are Russian and in the original photo so was the flag. Flying the American flag would see you having a chat with comrade commisar.

You are correct. The picture is of Soviet troops raising their flag over the Reichstag in Berlin.

That said, the caption is also correct about patriotism whipping facism- the Russians call WW2 the Great Patriotic War.
