July 17, 1918: The Romanov Family Is Executed By Communists

The Romanov family in 1913, five years before they were executed.

Czar Nicholas II and his family are executed by Bolsheviks in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Having forced Nicholas out of power, Bolshevik guards roused the Romanov family that night and brought them down to the cellar. There, armed men killed Nicholas, Alexandra, and their five children.

In October 1917, the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government. Following a harsh peace treaty with Germany in March 1918, Russia descended into civil war. On 17 July 1918, as anti-Bolsheviks approached Yekaterinburg, Nicholas and his family were executed. This was almost certainly on the orders of the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.

I actually went to the site where they were found in 2008. It's a monastery with a bunch of little chapels. Very interesting and the Kavas was excellent
