MARK CUBAN: Forgiving $1 trillion in student debt is 'the worst thing we could do'
While the closing of Sweet Briar College last week caught many people in higher education by surprise, some saw it as a sign of an inevitable college implosion.
For years, entrepreneur and billionaire investor Mark Cuban has warned of a "student-loan bubble" created by skyrocketing tuition and fueled by an endless supply of student loans.
A radical solution to the student-loan problem would be to forgive all student debt, as a viral essay by Robert Applebaum proposed six years ago.
However, Cuban thinks massive student-loan forgiveness would just make the bubble keep expanding.
"Forgiving the debt is the worst thing you can do, because all it does is bail out the universities," Cuban said.
Loan forgiveness would just show students that "Uncle Sam" will forgive their debts, according to Cuban. That would encourage students to keep taking out big loans to pay hefty tuition.

The folks at the Environmental Protection Agency, starting with a
long line of its administrators that now includes Gina McCarthy, think you and the Congress of the United States are stupid. They have been telling lies for so long they can’t imagine that their choke hold on the American economy will ever end.
This was on display in early March when Gina McCarthy testified to the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee, asking for a nearly $500 million increase in its 2016 budget. The total discretionary budget request would have topped out at $8.6 billion and would reward states nearly $4 billion to go along with the EPA’s Clean Power Plan.It is, however, coming to an end and the reason is a Republican-controlled Congress responding to the countless businesses and individuals being ravaged by a ruthless bureaucracy driven by an environmental agenda determined to deprive America of the energy sources vital to our lives and the nation’s existence.
The problem is that the Clean Power Plan is really about no power or far more costly power in those states where the EPA has been shutting down coal-fired plants that not long ago provided fifty percent of all the electricity in the nation.

It’s where Obama proclaims the benefits or importance of something and then immediately follows it up with, “but,” and his “justification or reasons upon which he will attempt to fundamentally change it.
Obama said, “We have a long tradition of gun rights and gun ownership in this country. The Second Amendment has been interpreted by the Supreme Court to mean the people have the right to bear arms. There are a lot of law-abiding, responsible gun owners who use it for protection or sport. They handle their weapons properly. There are traditions of families passing down [hunting] from father to son, or daughter … and that is important; that’s part of who we are. But...

A group of 24 brewers from across the country have come together to cut greenhouse gas emissions from their operations and call for strong national action to address climate change.
The breweries, which include Smuttynose Brewing Company, Guinness and Allagash Brewing Company, have signed onto the Climate Declaration organized through the sustainable business group Ceres. The declaration pledges that each company will take its own action to reduce emissions from its business, and will also support political action at the national level.
Jenn Vervier, director of strategy and sustainability at New Belgium Brewery, which is based in Fort Collins, Colorado, said action on climate change makes a lot of sense for the brewery because it uses a lot of energy in heating, cooling and transportation, and uses a lot of water. Rising emissions, too, are expected to have negative effects for the beer industry because it relies on the cultivation of barley and hops, which are sensitive to changes in the climate.
New Belgium Brewery has already installed 300 kilowatts of solar at its brewery in Colorado, and it capture methane generated in its operations, which it then burns to generate 15 percent of its electricity.
Vervier said the advocacy for national climate action also makes sense for brewers. "Even if we were to be ourselves climate neutral, it's such a small drop in the bucket," she said. "It's going to take a cleaner grid to lower the emissions from manufacturing."
Julia Person, sustainability manager at the Craft Brew Alliance, which owns the brands Redhook, Widmer Brothers and Kona, said the commitment to addressing their impact also has clear economic benefits. The company lowered its greenhouse gas emissions 8 percent in 2014, she said, which saved it more than $250,000 in energy costs. It has also reduced the amount of water needed to produce a gallon of beer to 3.5 gallons—much lower than the craft brewery average of 6 to 8 gallons, Person said.
"It's good for business, it's not just good for the environment," said Person. "We're lowering our operating costs. It's doing the right thing and having a benefit." ...
