Sessoms' is scheduled to appear in court next on Jan. 24.
On August 9, 2020, Sessoms walked up to where Hinnant was playing outside his father's home in Wilson, North Carolina and shot him in the head, according to WRAL.
Austin Hinnant said he heard a gunshot as his fiancée walked into the house at around 5:30 pm. Cannon's mother said the boy's two sisters, ages 8 and 7, saw their brother fatally shot.
"The first thing that went through my mind was maybe he just fell off his bike," the farther said. "The closer I got to him, the more I realized it was something far more serious."
"[You] can't imagine what it's like to hold your son in your arms with a gunshot wound to the head, and his blood is running down your arms," he said.
Hinnant was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he later died.
Hinnant said the family had lived next door to Sessoms and his parents for eight years leading up to the shooting, even inviting Sessoms over for dinner on Sunday, and never had any confrontations.
"There wasn't anything between me and him, any bad blood whatsoever, for him to have a reason to do this," he said.

WTF???? It took almost 18 months to decide if the child's gruesome death warranted any action?
I agree WTF is going on he should have been tried within a few week found guilty and EXECUTED by which ever of Cannon Hinnant's relatives that want to do it. If none of them do hold a lottery of the people on his block
I agree WTF is going on????? He should have been tried within a few week found guilty and EXECUTED by NOW. BY which ever of Cannon Hinnant's relatives that want to do it. If none of them want to do it. Hold a lottery of the people on his block and or the country
The family must also sue the city, county and state for 16 months of mental torture while waiting for some kind of action.
No shit.
Our "justice" system is fucked. What's left of this guy should just about be ready to fall off the cross he was crucified on.
This is what BLM and Antifa are working for, separate gentle rules if you are a different color than white. Our society needs to go back to how people reacted back 150 years ago, if somebody does something this heinous to a 5 year old kid,you hold the law at gunpoint, break into the jail and lynch the SOB using the nearest convenient tree. Make law enforcement scared of the law abiding public instead of the opposite. What if he gets off using the excuse of he wasn't given a swift trial?
But treating blacks equal to whites is racist. So much for equality, it's always been about revenge.
Crime is the new reparations.
Why so long? That sweet child deserved justice long ago. This guy won't last ten seconds in prison. Perhaps they have been studying him to rule out an insanity defence.
