October 4, 1582: The Gregorian Calendar Is Introduced

The Gregorian calendar was introduced in October 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to fix time errors in the older Julian calendar. [1] Nearly all countries on earth currently use the Gregorian calendar.

Why It Was Needed
  • Julian Drift: The Julian calendar miscalculated the solar year by about 11 minutes each year.
  • Time Shift: Over 1,600 years, those extra minutes added up to a 10-day drift.
  • Easter Problem: The spring equinox was moving away from March 21, which ruined the church schedule for calculating Easter. [1, 2]
How It Worked
  • Skipping Days: To fix the mistake, Pope Gregory XIII ordered that Thursday, October 4, 1582, be directly followed by Friday, October 15, 1582. [1, 2]
  • New Leap Years: The new system stated that century years (like 1700 or 1800) are not leap years unless they can be divided evenly by 400 (like 2000). [1]

Spread and Adoption
  • Catholic Nations: Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain switched right away in 1582.
  • Protestant and Orthodox Nations: Many countries waited decades or centuries to switch because of ties to the Catholic Church. Great Britain and its colonies did not switch until 1752, dropping 11 days. [1, 2, 3]
